πŸ“š ONE WEEK TO GO… ARE THEY READY FOR THE NEXT STEP? πŸ“š

The countdown is nearly over! In just one week, school gates will be opening again and children across Sheffield will be heading into a brand new school year.

But September isn't just about getting back into school. For many children, it's about taking their next big step.

🌟 A little one starting Reception
🌟 A child moving into a new year group
🌟 A Year 6 pupil getting ready for secondary school
🌟 Or a teenager heading into an important GCSE year

And each stage brings something different.

🧸 Starting Primary School
For our youngest children, school is a huge leap towards independence. This week, try giving them a few more little jobs to do for themselves. Let them practise opening their lunchbox, putting on their coat, fastening their shoes or carrying their own bag. It might take longer… but those little moments of "I can do it myself!" can make a huge difference to their confidence.

πŸŽ’ Moving Up Through Primary
For children already at primary school, September can mean new teachers, new expectations and sometimes new friendships. Rather than focusing on what they might find difficult, ask: "What are you looking forward to?" It could be seeing a friend, playing a favourite game, a particular lesson or simply being back with their teacher.

🏫 Primary to Secondary
And then there's Year 6 to Year 7. This is a BIG one. Suddenly there are different classrooms, different teachers, a timetable to follow, more equipment to remember and much more responsibility for keeping track of everything. One of the best things you can do this week is step back slightly and let them take the lead. Can they pack their own bag? Do they know what they need each day? Can they check their timetable? Do they know their route to school?

πŸ“š And for our GCSE students…
September can bring a different kind of pressure. Instead of talking about grades and results before they've even started, remind them that they don't have to know everything on day one. A new school year is a fresh start.

πŸ’› This week's tip:
Try asking your child: "What's one thing you're excited about and one thing you're a little worried about?"

If they do share a worry, resist the temptation to immediately fix it or say "don't worry." Sometimes simply listening is enough to make a big worry feel much smaller.

They don't have to feel completely confident before they start. Confidence often comes because they've started. ❀️

And if your child needs a little extra support with their learning or confidence this school year, Learn to Shine offers tutoring both online and in person in Sheffield, for children of all ages and stages.

πŸ“It's Freebie Friday! πŸ“
This week's free resource is all about fruit counting and word matching. Little ones draw a line to connect each fruit to its number word, then trace the words for extra handwriting practice. It's a lovely way to build number recognition, fine motor skills and confidence, all while having fun with some very cute fruit characters!

πŸ“š 2 WEEKS UNTIL BACK TO SCHOOL! πŸ“š

With children heading back on or around the 7th of September, the countdown is well and truly on. However you are feeling right now, excited, nervous, or a bit of both, you are not alone.

A special mention this week for anyone with a little one starting reception for the very first time. That mix of excitement and worry is so real right now, for them and for you. Will they make friends. Will they be okay at lunchtime. Will they even remember which peg is theirs. It is a big step, and feeling nervous about it just means you care.

Wherever your child is starting this September, from their very first day to their final GCSE year, a little preparation now goes a long way in helping those big feelings feel smaller for the whole family.

For our reception starters, our Preparing Your 4 or 5 Year Old for School guide is designed to help you gently get your child ready, emotionally and practically, so the first day feels like an adventure rather than something to fear.

And if your child needs a bit of extra support once term is underway, Learn to Shine offers tutoring both online and in person in Sheffield, for children of all ages and stages.

This week's tip: Keep conversations about school light and positive. Little comments like "you are going to have so much fun" said little and often do more good than one big serious chat the night before.

Today's GCSE results are in, and for every student it's a different feeling. Some of you are buzzing, results better than you hoped, doors wide open. Others are looking at that piece of paper feeling a bit flat, and that's okay too.

Whatever today looked like, there is always a next step, whether that's celebrating or looking at GCSE resits.

And if you're a parent watching all this unfold, today might have brought something else home too, this time next year it could be your own child in that position.

At Learn to Shine we offer 1 to 1 tuition and exam preparation across Maths, English and Science, KS3 and GCSE, Foundation and Higher. Whatever stage you're at, message us today.

Back to school tips for parents, from preschool and reception right through to GCSE year, including advice on routine, confidence and managing back to school anxiety.

πŸ“š 3 WEEKS UNTIL BACK TO SCHOOL! πŸ“š The countdown is officially on! Whether you’ve got a little one starting preschool for the very first time, a child moving up a year, or a teenager heading into GCSE year, the back to school nerves can hit at any age, and parents feel it too.

This week’s tip: Start shifting bedtimes back gradually now, even just 15 minutes earlier every few days. It makes the return to early mornings far less of a shock once term starts.

🐝 Happy World Honey Bee Day! 🐝

Small bees, big difference. Honey bees are tiny heroes who collect nectar and pollen, help our flowers grow, and give us nature’s sweetest treat.

At Learn to Shine, we love teaching children about the wonders of the natural world. Bees are a brilliant reminder that even the smallest efforts can create the biggest impact, something we try to instil in every learner we support.

You can help bees too. Plant flowers, leave out fresh water, and be kind to nature.

Let’s learn, care and shine together. Be a bee friend today!
