Something I see repeatedly with professional doctorate candidates:
They’re not struggling because they lack capability.
These are senior practitioners.
Decades of experience.
They’ve led teams, navigated systems, and handled complexity most academics never have to touch.
And yet ...
The doctorate still feels hard.
Not because the thinking isn’t there.
But because the rules are unfamiliar.
The language doesn’t match the one they’ve spent years mastering.
And “is this good enough?” hits differently when you’re used to knowing that it is.
That combination - high competence, unfamiliar terrain - creates a very particular kind of block.
And it’s almost never the one you've been told it is.
So you push harder.
Or doubt yourself.
Or assume you're the problem.
You're not.
You're just trying to solve the wrong thing.
I’ve created a simple audit to help you pinpoint what’s actually in the way — not the vague sense of being behind or overwhelmed, but the specific, nameable block.
Because once you can name it, you can work with it.
