📚 The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson 🦊🌲

A truly engaging story that captured the children's imagination ✨. As one of our core books this year, The Gruffalo provides rich opportunities to support learning across the EYFS 🌟. Through storytelling 📖, role play 🎭, cooking activities 👩‍🍳, sound exploration 🎶 and outdoor adventures 🌿, children develop their communication and language skills 🗣️, expand their vocabulary 💬, build confidence in imaginative play 💭 and strengthen their understanding of the world 🌍.

The experiences linked to this story support all areas of the EYFS ✅, encouraging creativity 🎨, problem-solving 🧩, physical development ⚽ and positive relationships 🤝 while following the children's interests ❤️.

It is always wonderful to see the children so engaged 😊 and enthusiastic 🌟 in their learning journeys 🚀.

🦀 Crab Tuff Tray Exploration Fun 🦀

Over the summer ☀️ we have been focusing on The Rainbow Fish 🐠 story and exploring different types of sea life through a range of engaging activities.

The children thoroughly enjoyed investigating our crab-themed tuff tray, where they were able to explore a variety of textures, materials and objects linked to the seaside. They showed great curiosity as they touched, sorted and discussed the different items, using their senses to learn more about the world around them. Many children used their imaginations to create their own stories and scenarios, developing their language and communication skills as they played alongside their friends.

It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged, confident and creative in their play. Activities such as these provide valuable opportunities for children to investigate, question and make connections in their learning while having lots of fun.

🌟 Fairy Tale Fun at Nursery🌟

Our children have been enjoying a range of fun, hands-on activities inspired by our Fairy Tales theme this term.

🧪 The Robins and Little Wrens loved creating magical potions, using a variety of utensils, pots, water and petals. Through this activity, the children explored different textures and scents while developing their curiosity and sensory skills.

👸 We also brought the story of Rapunzel to life with a tuff tray activity. The children carefully used scissors to cut Rapunzel’s hair, practising their fine motor skills, concentration and turn-taking while having lots of fun.

We are so proud of the children’s enthusiasm, imagination and creativity as they explore their favourite fairy tales! ✨

☀️👶🍦Tuff Tray Fun 🍦🎂🧊

Tuff trays provide a versatile, contained canvas for messy and sensory play. We set up tuff trays regularly to encourage everything from motor skill development to imaginative small-world exploration.

Tuff tray exploration offers several fundamental benefits for early years development:

Sensory Development: Exploring different textures (e.g., slime, dry rice, shaving foam, or ice) supports cognitive and brain development, memory, and helps children understand their environment.

Physical & Motor Skills: The large, flat surface encourages children to work standing up, which improves balance and core strength. Manipulating small loose parts or tools (tongs, tweezers, and brushes) builds essential fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Social Interaction: The spacious design accommodates multiple children at once. This encourages sharing, taking turns, and cooperative teamwork while building early communication and language skills.

Imaginative Play: Trays are easily transform into miniature worlds using natural elements (twigs, pebbles), figurines, or playmats. This nurtures creativity, storytelling, and problem-solving.

Cross-Curricular Learning: Trays can be adapted to teach specific concepts, such as early mathematics (counting, sorting, or patterning) and understanding the world.

As UK temperatures rise this week, here is a reminder of the differences between heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

An observational drawing activity, offering a wonderful opportunity for the children to express their creativity, embrace their love of art, and practise attentive listening. This activity has been thoughtfully prepared to inspire and encourage each child to explore. It is truly rewarding to watch the children immerse themselves in the creative process and take pride in producing their own unique pieces of artwork. Their enthusiasm and imagination never cease to amaze us, and we always look forward to seeing what they create.

At Wren House Nursery, we take pride in fostering a strong partnership between parents, carers, and our nursery. Our termly newsletters and weekly emails keep everyone informed about nursery events, curriculum highlights, key dates, and much more.

This week, our Kingfishers group (children aged 3-4) have been exploring the phonics sound 'I' as part of the SATPIN programme.

Congratulations to our Kingfisher who created an impressive igloo at home using sugar cubes, complete with penguins enjoying themselves inside and lights as well. This wonderful creation was shared during Thursday’s ‘Show and Tell’. Well done!

Our key rules provide an excellent foundation for guiding children to be kind, respectful, and brave. Building on these values, we supported Mental Health Week at Wren House Nursery with a variety of enjoyable and meaningful activities.

On Tuesday, our older children also explored hidden disabilities and participated in a purple day, marking the condition fibromyalgia.

Throughout the week, Wren House Nursery was filled with fun, learning, and opportunities to thrive.

Activities included interactive Colour Monster storytelling, using coloured monsters to help children identify and name their feelings; making emotion stress balls; enjoying a spa morning with foot spas and nail painting; and celebrating with a Pyjama Day, where children could bring their own teddy.
