The Common Starfish, Asterias rubens, found in UK waters. Usually orange with five arms. Often washed up on the beach after a storm. With an average life span of about 7 years this starfish can grow to over 50cm in diameter, with the average specimen being approximately 30cm . These are predatory, feeding on shell fish. They extrude their stomach into the shellfish, digesting it with enzymes before reabsorbing their stomach complete with digested shellfish.
