Willingdon and Cavendish Schools Scoop Eastbourne Young Chef of the Year 2026 🧑‍🍳 🏆

Students from Willingdon Community School and Cavendish School have been crowned winners of the Eastbourne Young Chef of the Year 2026, following an exciting and competitive final held at Gildredge House School

A total of 20 students from Years 7 & 8 and Years 9 & 10 took part in the final, where they were challenged to prepare a main course and a dessert suitable for a family occasion.

The finalists had earned their place through school heats, where they were selected as the top teams to represent their schools.

Five schools competed in this year’s event: Gildredge House School, Cavendish School, Willingdon Community School, The Eastbourne Academy and St Catherine's College

The standard of cooking was exceptionally high, impressing an expert panel of Judges:
🔸Hrvoje Loncarevic, Executive Chef, The Grand Eastbourne
🔸Chris Keil, Entegra
🔸James Dugan, Executive Chef, Sheraton Grand London Park Lane
🔸Jupiter Humphrey-Bishop, former Young Chef of the Year winner

The Mayor of Eastbourne attended to present the awards and celebrate the students’ achievements.

Mina O’Brien, Programme Manager at the Eastbourne Education Business Partnership CIO, said:
“The Young Chef of the Year competition continues to showcase the incredible talent we have across Eastbourne’s schools. It’s inspiring to see students develop their skills and confidence, and we are proud to work alongside our industry partners to create meaningful opportunities that support future careers in hospitality.”

Hrvoje Loncarevic said: “What a fantastic day at Eastbourne Young Chef of the Year 2026. It was a real pleasure to see so many talented young Students cooking with such imagination, skill and creativity. The future of our industry is in great hands. A huge well done to every student involved, and my sincere thanks to all the sponsors and judges for supporting and inspiring the next generation.”

The two winning teams received an outstanding prize: a table for six at the iconic Sheraton Grand London Park Lane, one of London’s most prestigious hotels, offering an unforgettable culinary experience proudly supported by Entegra and the Sheraton Park Lane hotel.

Prizes for second place and runners-up were generously donated by The Grand Eastbourne, Eastbourne Hospitality Association Tesco and Morissons

🗞️Pupils from The Parkland Federation Plant
Reading In-Bloom Design 🌸

Pupils from The Parkland Federation gathered at a very sunny Holywell on Thursday 18th June to meet Mayor of Eastbourne Cllr Margaret Bannister, plus invited guests and families, as part of the ‘Eastbourne In-Bloom’ initiative organised by Eastbourne Education Business Partnership CIO and kindly sponsored by Glendale Services

The school designed the annual carpet garden which is situated near the Holywell Tea Chalet. The pupils helped the team from Glendale to finish planting out their winning design together with the Mayor.

This is the 32nd annual carpet garden design created by pupils from local primary schools and planted at Holywell for Eastbourne Borough Council. The initiative contributes to the children’s curriculum work by putting learning into context and developing links beyond the classroom.

The ‘Reading In Bloom’ theme celebrates the National Year of Reading and enabled the schools to choose a favourite book to base their design on - The Snail and The Whale by local Sussex Author - Julia Donaldson.

Jane Branson and Jane Midwinter from Eastbourne LitFest presented the children with a copy of The Snail and The Whale as a keepsake of their great work.

The young Parkland pupils used a combination of traditional carpet garden plants together with coloured stones to create a beautiful eye-catching carpet garden design.

The distinctive carpet garden design will now be seen by the many hundreds of visitors to Eastbourne and local residents over the summer months.

Sam Smith, from Glendale said:

“Glendale was asked to contribute to Eastbourne in Bloom 2026. We were delighted to accept. Justin Jarrett (Contract Manager) and his team, Geoff and Keith have been amazing in putting together the children's design for the cover of The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson.Various succulents and different types of slate, shingle and stone were used to create the design. The day finally arrived for the children and mayor to all come together and plant the last few succulents to complete the design. Everyone had such enthusiasm. Glendale is very proud to be involved. Thank you to all.”

“It’s been wonderful to see the creativity, enthusiasm and teamwork shown by the pupils from Parkland School in bringing this year’s design to life. The ‘Reading In Bloom’ theme has provided a fantastic opportunity to celebrate both creativity and literacy, and the children have done an amazing job translating a beloved story into such a vibrant display. We’re incredibly proud to support initiatives like this that connect learning with real-world experiences and bring our community together.”
