😷 How can you tell the difference?

🤒 It can be tricky because the symptoms can be similar, but there are a few clues that can help you work out whether you’re dealing with a common cold or flu.

🥴 For children, flu can also cause things like ear pain, sore eyes, swollen glands and being less active than usual.

🤧 Please remember, if you’re worried about your child’s symptoms, NHS guidance is to seek medical advice.

👶🏼 Are you spoiling your baby?

🥰 We’ll answer this one for you... NO – you cannot spoil a baby!

“You’re spoiling your baby by cuddling them too much and picking them up every time they cry.”

💚 Did you know that it’s actually impossible to spoil a baby and that cuddling your baby is beneficial for both them and you? Oxytocin - the feel good hormone - increases in both mothers and babies during a cuddle.

💜 Babies are not trying to manipulate you with their cries. They cry when something is wrong, and they need you. Responding to your baby’s cries helps develop trust, teaching your baby that you will be there to help when they need something.

💔 A parent who ignores a baby’s need for comfort can lead to an insecure attachment.

🩷 Securely attached children seek their parents when distressed and know they will be comforted.

💛 Psychologists Dr Karen Appleyard, Ph.D. & Dr Lisa J. Berlin, Ph.D explain why a secure attachment is important:
“A secure attachment is characterized by the child’s ability to use his or her parent as a source of comfort and a “secure base” from which to explore"

🩵 A key principle of attachment theory is that dependence leads to independence. In other words, it is only when a child feels confident in his parent’s availability that he can fully explore and play on his own.

💙 Early attachments lay the foundation for social and academic skills. A number of studies that have followed children from infancy to adolescence or adulthood have illustrated that attachment quality is one of the strongest predictors of later development.”

❤️ So cuddle your baby, feed your baby and carry your baby! Your instincts are there for a reason - trust them!

🩵 This is for all the parents for whom the start of the new school term hasn’t been smiley doorstep photos and excited children.

💚 We are sending love to those children and parents of children who struggle to be in a school setting, who perhaps can’t be in school as much as their peers and for those who don’t attend school.

🩷 We know how incredibly tough the SEN parenting journey can be so if you have found the past few weeks difficult we are sending you love.
