Welcome back to school everyone.
What a week of glorious weather we have ahead.
I popped into the garden for the first time in a few weeks today. Surprisingly, the garden as a whole is looking tidy and kept, however the raised beds aren't looking their best, the weeds have taken over and are hiding our veggies.
I managed to spot 5 pumpkins growing nicely, and a fair few tomatoes too.

Popped into school today, not to do an work in the garden but to pitch a tent (practise).
Anyhow, I took a quick look at the garden, boy have things over grown!
Take these 3 pumpkins 🎃 , these are going to be a great size by Halloween. We have apples and tomatoes growing and even the frogs have grown.

Mrs Palfreyman and her young man have spent the last few months growing their own produce.
Today they prepared home grown new potatoes, garlic and (sweet pepper, left over from Fare Share).
That garlic smelled so wonderful!
Well done guys for harvesting our first produce.

You may remember the wood pigeon that was found outside our Year 6 Classroom 2 weeks ago.
Well, after being in a sorry state, unable to stand, fly or even eat, he is now alive, well and raring to go!

This afternoon I spent a few hours in the wildlife garden with with 2 young men who enjoy exploring the wildlife. While they were frog spotting I spotted this plant.
Ragwort.....I'd previously done a bit of research on it as I know it's host to a colourful caterpillar.
Just last week I'd collected 6 of these caterpillars to raise at home with my children. Not just any caterpillar though, this caterpillar is a Cinnabar Moth caterpillar. Cinnabar Moths are seen flying during the day and night. These caterpillars won't appear as moths until next summer, as they pupate over the winter months.

This afternoon I went back to work and spent some time with a young man in Year 6. We explored the wildlife garden together and found lots of interesting things like toads, frogs, moths ladybirds, woodlice, beetles and centipedes. We also have some actual pumpkins 🎃 forming and apples on the trees.
Our sunflowers aren't doing well at all but we've acquired a hose pipe to make watering our veggies easier.

So much colour in the wildlife garden today. Poppies, corn marigold and borage, not to mention those huge pumpkin plants...

Today during playtime, some of the children helped me to search for a cucumber spider that we'd previously spotted. We didn't find the cucumber spider but we did find lots of ladybird larvae. They'd never seen ladybird larvea before, you learn something new every day!

Update: the pigeon is now with a rescue.

This week has been all about saving birds.
Today, Mr Ashton rescued a juvenile wood pigeon that was being attacked by a bully crow. We kept the pigeon in a box under the desk in the classroom to recover from his ordeal.
The safest option was to bring him home to check him for injuries. He doesn't seem to have any injuries but is a little unsteady on his feet.
I left him to roam the garden to see if he was able to fly, unfortunately he tumbled into the pond. Once I'd fished him out I placed him inside my spare parrot cage, with a cosy bed and a lowered perch with food and water.
Now awaiting advice from a rescue..........

I thought this video was quite interesting and some children might too.
It's a group of ants working together to move a worm to their nest which I assume will be somewhere between or underneath the slabs.
For such tiny insects they can move things much bigger than themselves pretty quickly when they work together!

I arrived at work nice and early this morning with a few jobs to do before the children arrived, when Mr Ashton asked me to help him rescue a pigeon that had fallen in between two high fences.
When I got there, there was no way that the pigeon could get out, he could literally walk back and forth, there just wasn't enough room for him to open his wings and take off. He was pretty stressed.
Quick thinking Mr Ashton used his two garden brooms and encouraged the pigeon to perch on them while he lifted them up through the fence. At one point the pigeon was a little eager to leave and got his wing stuck through the bars, with some gentle guidance we managed to free his wing and he was finally out. It did take a while for him to get his bearings and de-stress but upon checking later, he'd flown away.

Finally, after alot of deliberation about the best position, the bat box is up in the wildlife garden. 🦇What a wonderfu...
