The ‘I’ versus ‘We’ issue at your job interview.
How to share the credit while showcasing your own contribution.
Typically, the example you use in answering a competence-based question during an interview will have involved a number of people – a team. Or it was something you did at the request of a manager. In these circumstances it is natural to say ‘we’ often: ‘we gathered the information’; ‘we organized a staff meeting’; ‘we researched the issue’; ‘we created a new procedure for complaints’ and so on.
While it is admirable to recognize your colleagues’ contribution, your interviewers wish to know what you did, not what the team did. There are a few approaches you can use to handle this while acknowledging the role of others.
For example:
‘Collectively, we created a new streamlined procedure for managing the complaints procedure. My specific contribution was…’
‘My manager requested that the complaints procedure be reviewed and updated. My actions to help achieve this were…’
‘While this was very much a team effort, my role involved...’
