Without breath we would have no life, without movement we would have no life. What part does the breath play in speaking, the activity that makes us truly human? Rudolf Steiner’s first advice to speakers is not to measure or hold breath back, bur rather to let go and give away whatever we need to use. There is always more!

We will explore the principles of giving and receiving in our breathing, how to develop and strengthen our awareness of our breathing, which is continuous movement, when we speak, and experiment with how we apply our newly won insights to text.

Please bring a piece of text, prose or verse, in any style of speech to play with. Sessions begin with exploring any questions that arise before entering into practical work. Please ensure that you have enough space in which to move in the room from which you will be joining the course.

How do we create consonants? What do we need to do as artists for them to come alive? How can we transfer the life we discover in consonants to words, phrases, lines and sentences? We will be returning to these basic building blocks of speech, uncovering more of their individuality, to be able to infuse the life they have into text.

Please bring a piece of text, prose or verse, in any style of speech to play with. Sessions begin with exploring any questions that arise before entering into practical work. Please ensure that you have enough space in which to move in the room from which you will be joining the course.

For the late summer and autumn of 2026 I will be returning to the foundational elements of speech from Rudolf Steiner’s perspective, discovering its impact on how we speak and then what we learn from it.

We will be exploring on Tuesdays how we can work with the breath. Then on Thursdays we will be returning to the consonants: their strength, form and delicacy in particular give us the backbone or spine of our speaking.

If you have attended one or more of Sarah’s Creative Speech courses in the past, please do not think that you will be returning to what you have already done in a past course. Each course may be covering similar territory but will nevertheless be investigated from a new perspective.

If you are interested in online individual speech sessions, either as a bundle on a particular theme or regularly, please enquire at [email protected] as to Sarah’s availability for such sessions.
