🎙️ Sarah Kane had the privilege of being a guest on The Inspired Actor: MICHA the Michael Chekhov Association Conversations podcast, alongside the wonderful host Tobias Jelinek and co-host Craig Mathers, to explore her decades of work bridging the Michael Chekhov Technique with Rudolf and Marie Steiner’s approach to Creative Speech.

How can breath, sound, gesture and movement bring language to life for an actor?

Drawing on her decades of experience, Sarah shares how Steiner Speech as an embodied practice can help actors explore text, imagination and character.

The conversation also explores the connections between speech gestures, movement, atmosphere and Psychological Gesture, and how these approaches can work together to help actors experience language beyond its intellectual meaning.

Sarah also reflects on the importance of bringing the body, imagination and spoken word together in actor training, exploring how the whole body can become involved in the act of speaking.

Sarah Kane has four full-day workshops to explore:

→ Thursday 15th October | Step 3: Ease, Form, Beauty and Entirety
Deepen movement and gesture by exploring Chekhov’s four qualities, bringing greater artistry and expression to your work as an actor.

→ Friday 16th October | Step 4: The Psychological Gesture
Explore the relationship between gesture and its psychological impact, discovering how physical movement can authentically express a character’s objectives.

→ Thursday 29th October | Step 5: The Character’s Imaginary Body
Develop your character’s physicality through imagination and discover how to embody it in performance.

→ Friday 30th October | Step 6: Imaginary Centres as the Character’s Core
Use imagination to explore your character’s inner life, discovering its form, colour and location within the body.

What to bring: A monologue and a scene to work on, soft-soled shoes and comfortable clothing suitable for movement. For Step 6, please bring the same monologue and scene used in Step 5.

What happens when an actor explores a character through earth, air, fire and water?

The next step in The Essentials in Twelve Steps: Michael Chekhov’s Acting Technique with Sarah Kane explores The Four Qualities of Movement.

Actors will experiment with earth, air, fire and water through movement, using the imagination to explore and embody character in a new way.

Monday 5th October | 10am–5pm | New Actors Centre | £48

Participants are asked to bring a monologue and a scene to work on, along with soft-soled shoes and clothes suitable for movement.

Another throwback to Sarah Kane’s years at the Stanislavsky Theater Studio in Washington, D.C.

While working full-time with the company, Sarah took on a variety of characters including this rather memorable chaperone.

One of the details Sarah discovered for the character was a very peculiar habit: she was always chewing.

It is a small detail, but one that says so much about the process of characterisation- finding the physical habits, gestures and qualities that can begin to bring a character fully to life.
