It was National Moth Week from the 18th-26th of July and to celebrate we thought we should show the amazing variety of moths that can be found here in Suffolk.

Moths are much misunderstood but there are 2500 known species in the UK which come in a variety of patterns, colours and sizes.

So take as many pictures of moths as you can and record them for citizen science.

With East Anglia being declared officially in drought on Wednesday, we are now experiencing wildfires in Suffolk.

Dunwich Heath which is 25 miles north of Ipswich is ablaze.
Suffolk County County have said the fire is around 247.1 acres (100 hectares) which is equivalent to 140 football pitches. Homes and 200 caravans at a holiday park were evacuated overnight.

Dunwich Heath is a National Landscape and is a rare habitat for many plants and animals including the rare Dartford warbler, deer and many types of bee and wasp. Plant such as Common Heather and Bell Heather grow there, as well as European and Western Gorse.

The impacts of climate change are real and it has never been more important to understand how a changing climate is causing droughts to be more prevalent and wildfires on a scale not seen in the UK.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service says 17 crews are involved at the scene of the large blaze.

An army of Cinnabar Moth caterpillars were spotted at Flatford Mill recently, they were feasting on the Ragwort which grows in our garden.
We managed to get some fantastic photos of the caterpillars with their distinctive black and gold stripes!

Every June, the Geographical Association encourages schools to take part in fieldwork.

We want to see what our groups are getting up to at our centres during the Festival of Fieldwork.

As an organisation we are are collating information from across the UK to see what and where people are doing fieldwork so we can share how groups are engaging with geography outside the classroom.

The best will be shared at the end of the month to show the impact of Fieldwork!

Our work experience placement went out with a group of A level Biologists to our local saltmarsh to study succession.

They took some amazing close up photos of the incredible wildlife and beautiful habitat.

Saltmarshes are special habits which are home a variety of birds, insects, fish and plants. They naturally filter out heavy metals and pollution, provide a natural buffer against storms and sequester carbon to aid in the fight against climate change.

Look at what our John Muir Conservation students have been getting up to this past week!

After setting the moth trap up at night, in the morning they opened the trap to study the moths caught inside.

Firstly identifying the moths using guides and then drawing some incredible artwork.

This is all part of their DofE Gold Residential course at Field Studies Council Flatford Mill.
