📢 New Paper Alert | Legacy as Evaluative Authorization: A Process Theory of Divergent Organizational Trajectories
Why do organizations that draw on their past in similar ways end up on different paths? The key insight is that organizations diverge not because they inherit different histories, but because they give those histories different forms of stability.
This article provides a theory of how organizations use their past to shape future strategic decisions.

📕 New JMS Insights Blog Post | Why Microfinance Works - Even When It Doesn’t Create Entrepreneurs
Based on extensive fieldwork in rural South Africa, the study shows how borrowers and loan officers sustain microfinance through practices rooted in Ubuntu: an African philosophy centred on care, reciprocity, and community.
Rather than viewing loans used for household needs as a failure, the research demonstrates how flexible, community-based approaches help people navigate financial uncertainty while maintaining strong repayment and supporting those around them. The findings suggest that the lasting value of microfinance may lie not only in fostering entrepreneurship, but also in strengthening communities' ability to manage scarcity together.

📢 New Paper Alert | Bifurcation Bias in Executive Compensation and Family Firm Performance: The Role of Normative Context
Bifurcation bias, the preferential treatment of family managers over non-family managers, is widespread in family firms. Drawing on justice and entitlement theories, this paper demonstrates that fairness judgments are socially embedded: cash-based compensation of family managers undermines firm performance, but the effect varies depending on regional traditions, industry competitiveness, and family involvement in management.
This paper provides practical guidance for family firms seeking to balance fairness with family-centred goals.

🪶 New JMS Says Alert | Beyond Resilience: The Privilege of Composure Under Geopolitical Tension
🌍 When personal crisis strikes, academic life carries on around it: deadlines, meetings, and expectations continue as if disruption is an individual problem. Omid Aliasghar reflects on how composure must be renegotiated when their full presence is no longer possible. Feelings of isolation are often not because of the crisis itself, but because of the gap between the support that exists and the structural conditions that prevent it from being translated into action. A field built on the study of how organizations navigate disruption has, for too long, asked its own members to navigate it in silence. Closing the gap between care and the conditions that allow it to act are what the field demands in order to shift composure from performative to reflexive.

📢 New Paper Alert | Complementary or Substitutive Environmental Governance? ISO 14001 and Environmental Stringency for Emission Reduction
Contrary to the dominant view that public and private governance are substitutes, this paper proposes that they can complement one another, depending on the institutional setting.
Using the global diffusion of ISO 14001 as an indicator of the growing privatization of environmental governance, and environmental stringency as a reflection of the strength and effectiveness of public environmental governance. This paper examines how ISO 14001 and environmental stringency interact to reduce corporate emissions across institutional systems showing that complementarity is more likely in liberal market economies or other systems following a market-based logic, and when firms expand internationally.

📕 New JMS Insights Blog Post | My Child Started a Business. Have I Lost My Successor?
Many family business owners worry that when a son or daughter launches their own venture, the prospect of them one day leading the family firm disappears. New research published in JMS suggests the reality is far more encouraging. Drawing on evidence from more than 8,000 potential successors in Sweden, the study finds that early-career entrepreneurial experience can actually make next-generation family members more likely to take over the family business. At the same time, successful entrepreneurial ventures create attractive career alternatives, highlighting the importance of ensuring the family firm remains an appealing opportunity for future leaders.
