Registration for our postgraduate trip to the Bowes Museum is now *live*.

On Tuesday 15 May, CNCS post-grads and post-docs will visit The Bowes Museum. Rosie Razzall, Curator of Prints and Drawings at Royal Collection Trust, is delivering a talk on ‘Queen Victoria, Napoleon III and the Events of 1855’ to accompany the exhibition Queen Victoria in Paris.

We will view the exhibition, tour the museum and have the chance to look at archival material in the reading room with Lindsay Macnaughton (Durham University) and Simon Spier (University of Leeds), both current CDP students working in partnership with The Bowes Museum.

We plan to finish off the day at a local pub before returning to Durham by coach. The charge for the talk, including museum entrance is £6 per person. A minibus will leave from Durham. There are a limited number of spaces. Please register below by Wednesday 9th May.

*Interdisciplinary ‘Masterclass’: Professional Development Workshop* for postgraduates and ECRs

Hosted by the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies, this postgraduate workshop takes interdisciplinarity as its focus and asks: what does it mean to be ‘interdisciplinary’? The ‘masterclass’ seeks to offer practical insights into developing an interdisciplinary project, applying for funding, and integrating interdisciplinary perspectives into postgraduate and postdoctoral research. Professor Bernard Lightman leads proceedings with a discussion of his own interdisciplinary approach to his research on science and culture in the nineteenth century, followed by a Q&A. A panel discussion follows, with a consideration of what being ‘interdisciplinary’ means for postgraduates and early-career researchers in the twenty-first century, including its opportunities and challenges. The workshop will end with an interactive “peer-reviewing” of pre-submitted project proposals and abstracts focused on interdisciplinarity. This offers attendees the chance to come away with practical advice and constructive critique, which they can apply to their current research or future projects.

'Finding (and Acquiring) Funding' Workshop

Hosted by the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies, the ‘Finding (and Acquiring) Funding’ workshop aims to illuminate aspects of the academic funding process for postgraduates at every level, alongside early-career researchers from across disciplines and time periods. The workshop brings together academics, postgraduates, and researchers collaborating with non-universities to offer tips, advice, and insight into seeking (and successfully acquiring) pots of funding for doctoral study, collaborative partnerships, and small grants. The event is free to attend and aimed particularly at current PhD and MA students, but all postgraduates and early-career researchers are welcome from across the North East.

This workshop aims to illuminate aspects of the academic publishing process for postgraduates and early-career researchers from across disciplines. Hosted by the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies, the workshop brings together academics, publishers, and postgraduates to offer an overview of what “getting published” means and involves, including turning the PhD into a monograph and the peer-reviewing procedure. The event is free to attend and is aimed particularly at PhD students, but all postgraduates and early-career researchers are welcome.
