Unesco Chair on Archaeological Ethics and Practice in Cultural Heritage

We are delighted to be at the Varendra Research Museum, in Rajshahi Bangladesh, to deliver the final part of the second phase of our capacity strengthening training programme sponsored by the British Council's Cultural Protection Fund in partnership with the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

During this we have co-developed with staff at the Varendra Research Museum an exhibition "A History of Bangladesh in 25 Objects", narrated through objects in the museum's collections. Making connections between objects, collections, communities and sites and historic monuments, the exhibition was launched as part of a Heritage Festival which celebrated the vibrant tangible and intangible culture of Rajshahi and Bangladesh.

Professor Coningham attended the 47th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee in Paris last week as a technical expert member of Nepal’s State Party delegation.

This was a humbling experience as a UNESCO Chair on Archaeological Ethics and Practice in Cultural Heritage and Co-Director of Durham University’s MA in International Cultural Heritage Management programme to witness technical knowledge meeting heritage diplomacy.

The interactions between the 21 elected members of the Committee, the Secretariat of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, State Party delegations, State Party Ambassadors to UNESCO and experts belonging to the Advisory Bodies International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and IUCN are an integral part of UNESCO’s 1972 World Heritage Convention and helps guide the decisions of the Committee.

Whether successfully inscribed on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites this year or not, congratulations to all those who worked so hard to have their exceptional sites presented and discussed in the session and commit themselves to the Convention’s 5 strategic objectives:
