Here is a look at yesterday's session with
Her second course so far.
We worked on saw use, essential knots, and setting up a tarp shelter. We also spent time sharpening her axe and knife to get her tools ready for her next course.

When natural tinder is scarce, you can always rely on a trusty feather stick. πŸͺ΅πŸ”₯ It’s a rewarding skill to master.

What’s your go to method for starting a fire? Do you stick with feather sticks, or do you prefer other natural or man-made options? Let me know πŸ‘‡

It was great to have Sam back yesterday for her second course.

We kicked things off with safe saw and axe work and maintenance, then paused for a quick bite to eat. After lunch, we focused on knife care and finished up with a feather stick demonstration for her to practice at home.

What's the one tool in your kit you always make sure is sharp and ready to go before heading out?

You have to think outside the box sometimes.

Here is a makeshift camp oven used to heat up a pie. Placing hot embers directly onto the pot lid radiates heat downward to warm the top crust while the heat below cooks the base. It's fair to say it works a treat and it was delicious!

Have you ever tried improvised baking while camping, or do you stick to standard camp meals?

Yesterday, Mark joined me in the woods for a full day course. Having already completed a couple of basic courses elsewhere, he booked this session to build on his foundations and take his skills further.

We started with a brew and a chat to establish exactly what he wanted to cover. From there, we set out on a foraging walk to identify plants for edible, medicinal, toxic, and practical uses, enjoying some wild snacks along the way. We also went over natural navigation methods for his future trips.

After lunch, the focus shifted to sharp tool care, covering axe and knife sharpening and general maintenance. We spent the rest of the afternoon working through a wide range of knots for different applications and finished up by making natural cordage out of nettles.

A brilliant day out in the woods.

If you were spending a day in the woods, what is the one bushcraft skill you’d love to learn or improve on? Drop a comment below!

It's Bilberry season!

I have a full bag of these ready to pair with wild blackberries for a batch of homemade gin. Bilberries add a deep purple colour and a sharp, rich flavour that works brilliantly for infusing spirits! Though I am still partial to a fruit loaf πŸ˜‹

Do you make your own wild-foraged spirits, or do you stick to baking with your harvest? What's your favourite?

Old folklore says a heavy crop of red haws signals a harsh winter ahead, nature's way of keeping wildlife fed through the cold months. The ones in this clip are surprisingly large this year.

I love reading these subtle clues; our ancestors relied on the hedgerows long before forecasts existed.

Do you reckon there's truth in these old weather signs, or is it just superstition?
