Browney Academy

Browney Academy Primary School in Browney, County Durham. Browney Academy is a small but perfectly formed primary school in Browney, close to the city of Durham.

We currently have just over 100 pupils on roll and pride ourselves on giving each and every one of our children the individual care and attention they need to thrive at school. We are a small school with a big heart! We want the time every child spends at our school to be a happy and exciting one. We have high expectations of all our pupils and aim to provide a safe and secure environment in which everyone can learn together and develop as individuals. By working with parents and the community we work hard to develop a partnership to education that benefits all of our children. In our most recent Ofsted inspection our school was graded as 'good' with 'outstanding' features for behaviour and safety. We are very proud of our Ofsted report which shows the progress we have made over the last few years and that we continue to make on our journey towards 'outstanding'.

Year 2 pupils conducted a hands-on experiment to investigate the impact of soap on germs! 🧼🦠

To help them understand how germs can spread, the children sprinkled pepper on to water to represent germs. They then placed their finger into the water and observed that the 'germs' stuck to their finger, just as real germs can stick to our hands during the day!

The excitement grew when the children dipped a finger covered in soap into the water. To their amazement, the pepper quickly moved away from their soapy finger! This reaction helped the children see how soap can remove germs and keep our hands clean.

The class made careful observations and shared their ideas that washing hands properly with soap is one of the best ways to stop the spread of germs and stay healthy. The experiment sparked lots of curiosity and discussion, making learning both memorable and fun. Well done, Year 2, for showing such enthusiasm and fantastic scientific thinking! ⚛️🧑‍🔬

The science of colour! 🎨

Our key stage 1 scientists have had lots of fun experimenting with mixing colours to create new ones, making colours fizz, and finishing with our favourite experiment... milk colour explosions!

There were lots of exciting reactions, colourful discoveries and plenty of WOW moments! Our super scientists had a fantastic time predicting, investigating and seeing science in action - right before their eyes! 🤩

In history, our Year 2 children have been learning about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. Yesterday, in pairs, the class began a new board game where they answered questions with facts about Mary Seacole. They did such a good job at remembering lots of information. Meet our new Anti-Bullying and Friendship Ambassadors and our Rights Respecting Champions!👋

Two of our pupil leadership groups are ready for action! Between them they will promote children's rights and pupil voice across school, live our school values every day, and act as Playground Heroes so that break times are fun and safe for everyone. They are there to look out for others and to set an example, and anything serious always goes straight to an adult. Congratulations to all of them. We can't wait to see what you do this year!🤩

Our lunchtime Wellbeing Club marked International Dot day last week by looking at the story, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.📚

The story follows Vashti, a girl who is certain she cannot draw, until one small dot gives her the confidence to try. The children took inspiration from her and set about making dot masterpieces of their own, and every one of them turned out beautifully different. Dot Day suits the club rather well! It makes the point that everyone is creative and that art does not have to be perfect, that something big can start with one small brave step, and that time spent making something is good for how children feel as well as for what they produce. Egg-cellent Science Club! 🥚Our first Science Club session was a huge hit! We had lots of fun carrying out experiments like predicting how much salt you need to make an egg float. The children also became engineers, designing and building egg protectors to protect an egg from a fall.

We had lots of fun testing our designs and seeing which ones worked! It was a fantastic afternoon. ⚛️

Our Year 3s excelled in their first gymnastics session with SSP!

Demonstrating brilliant listening skills, they recreated the balances shown in the lesson. Some children challenged themselves to combine balances and created a small routine which showcased at the end of the session.

We are excited to see what they will learn next week! 🤸

We are absolutely delighted with the way our new little stars have settled into our Browney family! The children love exploring their new learning environment, making new friends, learning our routines and expectations, and having fun with their Year 6 buddies. What a fantastic start to their school journey, we are so proud of them!
