The fourth talk in the Horizons series will honour South African writer, journalist and Durham University lecturer Ruth First, who was killed for her prominent role in the struggle against apartheid.

Durham University continues to honour Ruth First through a scholarship for students from Southern Africa. Established in 1964, the scholarship represented the University's support for the anti-apartheid struggle and was named after Ruth First following her death in 1982.

Shamiso Zamba, The Ruth First Scholar for this year, will share her experiences with the scholarship and talk about what Ruth First means to her. She will also speak on the current situation in Zimbabwe, her home country.

Chair of the Ruth First Educational Trust, Dr Mike Thompson, will narrate the story of Ruth First's life and speak of her legacy.

Professor Nancy Cartwright will speak on the research project she leads which highlights First's tenacious political action and inspiring research and teaching, as well as communicate the ways in which First will be honoured this year on the 40th anniversary of First's death.

Yesterday, St Mary's College welcomed students, staff, alumni and friends to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Fergusson building.

Queen Elizabeth II laid down the foundation stone for the construction of St Mary's College's new and current home in 1947, and students moved into the breathtaking Fergusson building in 1952.
