Durham’s Engineering Day concludes the induction week with a full day of designing, building and testing rubber band powered cars. Working with a limited set of materials, incoming L1 students must balance travel distance, straight line accuracy, water spillage and build quality, encountering engineering trade-offs from the outset.From debating design choices to cheering each other on during test runs, the day was all about teamwork, experimentation and learning by doing.
This makes the activity a shared experience that encourages conversation, cooperation and learning through experimentation. By bringing students, academics and technicians together around an accessible practical task, Durham combines a welcoming introduction to the department with a taste of the design process underpinning its general engineering programme.
