So excited for the fist lecture: A History of the World in Four Algorithms

Thursday 15 October 2026, 5:30pm
A History of the World in four Algorithms
Professor Sarah Hart

Algorithms are fundamental to the story of mathematics – they’ve been around for over four thousand years. A theorem may prove that a solution to a problem exists, but an algorithm gives you the directions to actually find it. This lecture explores four key algorithms that have not just shaped pure mathematics, but have found unexpected applications in areas as diverse as nuclear physics, film making, medicine, and music.

🌿 Secret Gardens of South Bailey 🌿

Wednesday was a lovely day for exploring the hidden gems of our gardens, jointly hosted by John’s and Cuth’s.

A huge thank you to our heritage experts Martin Roberts, Adrian Green and Ross Pearson for sharing their expertise with our visitors!

Thanks also to our student volunteers Harry, Aurelia, Simeng, Phoebe and Jun for being there to explain how these historic spaces are brought to life and enjoyed by students today.
