I've got some very exciting news this evening, we're running a Spooky Science Special for Halloween!

Join us at Merryoaks Community Hall where we will be mixing up potions and more fun hands-on spooky science experiments, as well as our favourite puking pumpkin 🎃

This class is best for children aged 4-11 years. Children can come in fancy dress, although be warned some experiments can get messy! Book now via the link in the comments.

We've started our first topic in our Natural Sciences class with Durham Home Ed Community Hub which is all about microscopy 🔬

The children started by preparing their own slides with onion cells and viewing them under the microscope, identifying the cell structure and comparing slides with and without stain to see what difference it made.

A small confession that probably won't come as much of a surprise to those who know me...

I'd love to say that I have an organised plan of what to post on social media and when, and believe me I have tried, but I just can't get it to stick for long. As for scheduling posts... Well, I really did try 🙈

Instead, our social media is a lot more sporadic, with a mix we've been doing in classes, something new I've found interesting or me rambling because I haven't posted something for a few days and feel like I should so you lovely people still see me on your feeds! So hello if you're reading this 👋👋

You'll be pleased to know that all my time and organisational energy goes into coming up with new ideas for sessions, researching topics and testing experiments. It just means that you guys just get treated to a photo of the worst Tub of Shame we've ever had instead 😂 If you want to know what that name is all about, you'll have to ask my Thursday crew!

Our earthquake simulator was a hit in our chemistry group this week with Durham Home Ed Community Hub! The children did a great job making houses to withstand the earthquake.

I'm having great fun working through our earth sciences topic at the moment! 🌍 Volcanoes is next week and I'm not sure who's more excited, me or the children 😂

I got to go and see one of my favourite animals on Monday at Yorkshire Wildlife Park 🐧

These African penguins have some amazing adaptations, including:
🐧Streamlined shape to help them swim quickly through water
🐧Black and white colouring to help them camouflage from both above and below while swimming
🐧Oils they spread through their feathers to waterproof them
🐧Pink patches on their face to help them cool down ..and so many more!

It ended up being biscuit week in our home ed classes with Durham Home Ed Community Hub!

In Chemistry we used biscuits to model different tectonic plate boundaries then in our new Practical Skills session, we were investigating which biscuit was the best dunker for a cup of coffee (of tea) while practicing our fair testing skills 🍪

When you go to your first home ed day at Beamish Museum as a parent and get to explore all the fun state changes making ice cream in the history of ice cream workshop 🍦I also learnt all about Penny Licks which was interesting 😱👅

It was also lovely to spend time with so many families from our classes and see the kids all playing together ♥️

Physics is my degree and my specialism, so it makes me sad to hear how often physics is often thought of as the 'hardest' or 'most boring' science when it explains so much about how the world around us works.

It doesn't have to be though, and that's why in our weekly physics class for 11-13 year olds, we do things a little differently. We don't do textbooks or PowerPoints, instead we chat about the science, ask questions and test it out for ourselves. We've started our motion topic this term and we've practiced measuring distances accurately with paper aeroplanes and calculated speed by making balloon rockets. The physics is still there, but we get to do it rather than just read about it.
