At the centre of the photograph is Housemaster Canon Richard Budworth, who also served as Headmaster of Durham School from 1907 to 1932.

Over a century later, this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and people of School House.

After years of hard work and dedication, our pupils can now look forward to their next steps, whether that’s heading to university, starting an apprenticeship or pursuing a new opportunity.

A level Results Day 2026.

A huge congratulations to each and every pupil on an outstanding set of results. We are incredibly proud of you, and you should be so proud of yourselves and all the hard work that has brought you to this moment.

This year’s results are a fantastic achievement:
- 12.7% of all A Level grades were A* - the highest proportion in the School’s history.
- 62.4% of grades were A*– B - the strongest performance since 2018.
- 85.4% of grades were A*– C, placing this year’s cohort among the strongest of the past two decades.
- 74.1% of grades achieved by girls were A*–B, with 12.9% awarded at A*.

Behind the headline figures are a wide range of achievements and exciting next steps. From Medicine, History and Engineering to Politics, Modern Languages, Performance Costume and Art, our pupils are heading in many different directions, with destinations including Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Southampton and Bath.

We are also celebrating pupils continuing their sporting journeys alongside their studies, including rowing and hockey, while others are pursuing vocational pathways through BTEC Business and Sport.

This breadth of achievement reflects the many different routes available at Durham School. Whether pupils are progressing to leading universities, pursuing their passion through sport, following a vocational pathway or taking their next step into a specialist field, each journey is unique.

Well done, Class of 2026. Your hard work, determination and ambition have brought you to this point, and we cannot wait to see where your next chapter takes you.

From the Archives: On Stage and On the Water

This week, we look back at two memorable moments from Durham School’s history.

In 1958, pupils brought Shakespeare’s Richard III to life, with Peter Knowles taking the title role in a production directed by future Second Master Hugh Dillon. The performance also featured David Stuart Chadwick, who would later go on to find fame as musician Chad Stuart.

We also revisit the 1st Crew at the Henley Royal Regatta on 7 July 1939. Pictured outside the Regatta’s official photographers, George Bushell & Sons, are M.J. Banister, A. Todd, C.G. Ferguson, D.A. Bickmore and G.B. Willis, capturing a proud moment in the School’s rowing history.
