The fair will be held on the top floor of the Teaching & Learning Centre, running from 1-4pm on the 23rd October.

What do you you wish you knew before you took the module?
For those of you who may remember, last year we asked students to give their honest reviews of maths modules, we then collected these reviews and sent them to maths students to help them to choose their modules for next year.

Due to popular demand we are doing the same again this year and need your help. We have put a google form together for you to fill out in your own time, Please fill out the the sections for the level and module you completed and let us know your true thoughts. The more opinions the better!!!

Colloquium and cake is back for 2024!

Next Wednesday, the amazing Katie Gittins will give her talk asking can we hear the shape of a drum? 🥁

Imagine a bounded region in the Euclidean plane with fixed boundary, that is a drum. If we knew all the frequencies at which this drum vibrates, would we be able to tell its shape? Or are there two drums with different shapes that vibrate at the same frequencies?

The celebrated paper of M. Kac “Can One Hear the Shape of a Drum?” posed this question in 1966. In fact, problems related to this question had captured mathematicians’ attention since at least the work of Rayleigh in the nineteenth century and they continue to inspire the field of Spectral Geometry today.

In this talk we will explore some of the fascinating results about hearing - or not hearing? - the shape of a drum.
