Blue Coat CofE Aided Junior School

The year 6's had their annual visit to the cathedral for one of their Leavers Services. Some of the children took part in a parade to begin with, with our Blue Coat school banner and then they all got to make a paper lantern to go alongside a prayer. They all then lit up their lanterns with a light while some year 10's from another school read out some of their prayers. All in all it was a lovely afternoon for our Year 6's. 😀

The children in Year 3 have been designing and making their own 3D biscuit packaging in DT. Today, the children have had lots of fun making and eating their own biscuits. This enabled them to test if their biscuit boxes were fit for purpose. A great afternoon enjoyed by all! 🍪👨‍🍳

On Sunday 26 April we were asked to lead a pilgrimage for a visit by the Archbishop of York, The Rt Revd Stephen Cottrell. Several families across the school attended and we had a lovely day walking together from Finchale Priory to Durham Cathedral. The children enjoyed chatting to Revd Stephen and Canon Charlie from the cathedral, and some of them led us in prayers at each stopping point. It was a special afternoon which ended with the Archbishop giving a blessing for all of us at Blue Coat school.

British Science Week has been a blast. We've enjoyed lots of Science activities on the playground this week like the heart rate obstacle course, exploration of spherical bubbles and plant scavenger hunts. All led expertly by our amazing Science Ambassadors!👩‍🔬🧑‍🔬☘️⏳💡🔭🧪

5B opened their Museum of Cam Toys to Year 3s yesterday. They had so much fun and pride in sharing their hard work from D&T and the Year 3s loved seeing and playing with such an interesting range of creative toys.

We were delighted to welcome Rachel Porter, a local author, back to our school on Monday for a special book signing event! This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to meet a real writer and get their book personally signed.

Events like this help inspire a love of reading, creativity, and imagination in our young people. We’re proud to support local talent and give our pupils the chance to connect with authors from our own community.

Last week, the children enjoyed a range of book related activities on Thursday 5th March to celebrate World Book Day; this included peer reading, quizzes and of course dressing up as a word of their choice. We were so impressed with the wide range of vocabulary that had been thought of! A particular highlight was a visit from local author Rachel Porter who shared her book 'Bandit's Great Escape' with the children. 🌎📖📚

Year 5 enjoyed their drama experience day as part of their non-fiction unit on the Titanic. We used the technique of Rolling Theatre with the children taking on a range of characters who were present at the launch of the Titanic’s maiden voyage. Through movement, mime and conversation, they brought the launch to life and were able to empathise with the characters.
