In 1967, John Carvell took on a very special role - the University of Dundee’s very first Sports Union President.
John was elected while studying Medicine, representing the University's 24 newly formed sports clubs at a pivotal moment in our history.
As Sport and Active Health Co-Director Paul McPate explains, “When the University of Dundee was established as an independent institution in 1967, the University’s student numbers totalled 2,324 – almost 1,000 students less than the current Sports Union membership!
“As the new University sought to establish its own unique identity, sport played a key role in galvanising the student body, while delivering sporting success which helped to showcase the University and grow a sense of community amongst its students.”
Nearly 60 years after John’s appointment as President, we welcomed him back on campus to recognise his efforts in laying the foundations for the development of sport at the University.
At the Sports Union’s Blues and Colours Awards 2026, he was recognised with an Honorary Full Blue - the highest sporting honour awarded.
Speaking after receiving the honour, John said, ”I will treasure the moment for the rest of my life."

There was an impromptu Northern Ireland alumni reunion in Dundee this week when University graduate Kirsty Speers (MA Psychology, 2013) met up with Gary Lightbody, lead singer of the band Snow Patrol.
The band, who were in town to perform in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their album Eyes Open, famously formed while students at the University of Dundee. Kirsty, who is a member of staff at the University and, like Gary, hails from Bangor, said the experience was "unbelievably special".
Were you on campus when Snow Patrol formed? Or are you one of our many Northern Irish graduates? If so we'd love to hear your stories - share them in the comments!

Ever wonder what your classmates have been up to since leaving the University of Dundee?
For Ali and Gail, their Dundee story began with a chance meeting in a French class, and became a lifelong one.
Reconnecting years after graduation, they married, raised a family, and eventually made a new home in Australia, but they’ve always looked back fondly on their time at Dundee.
Their story is just one of many shared by our alumni community.
From the Classes of the 1960s to the Classes of the 2020s, The Bridge brings together updates from graduates across generations - from career milestones to personal achievements and life updates.
