Meet Our Graduate: Yana

Congratulations to Yana on graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences!

During her studies, Yana gained valuable research experience through a summer project in the Alessi Lab within the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit, before completing her Honours Project in the Saurin Lab.

“A special thank you to my summer placement supervisor, Professor Dario Alessi, and my honours project supervisor, Professor Adrian Saurin, for introducing me to the world of research. Your patience, mentorship, and support have been invaluable, and my time in the lab has strengthened both my scientific skills and my passion for research.”

Alongside her academic achievements, Yana made a significant contribution to student life at Dundee, serving as DUSA Vice President of Learning and Teaching and Life Sciences President.

“These experiences challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, strengthened my leadership and communication skills, and allowed me to make a meaningful contribution to the student community.”

In recognition of her dedication and impact, Yana received the School President of the Year 2025/26 Award at the DUSA President’s Awards, alongside the School of Medicine President Kieran.

Reflecting on her time at Dundee, Yana said, “As I leave the University of Dundee, I do so with much more than a degree. I'm taking with me not only knowledge and practical experience in biomedical sciences, but also the confidence, resilience, and skills that have shaped who I am today.”

Meet Our Graduate: Finlay

We congratulate Finlay, who graduated this summer with a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology.

“The University of Dundee has been an incredible place to study the last few years made even better by the people I’ve met along the way.”

Finlay completed his Honours project, as well as a summer project, in the Pawlowic Lab who study Cryptosporidium. In recognition of his academic performance, Finlay was awarded three prizes! They were the Pharmacology Honours Prize, Drug Development (Scotland) Prize and Undergraduate British Pharmacological Society (BPS) Prize. Amazing achievement!

Big news... we have been ranked in the top 20 of UK universities in the 2027 edition of The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide! 🎉

The University of Dundee ranks 20th - a rise of three places - in the guide, which measures the performance of 130 UK universities.

We are super proud of Vitalii and his amazing achievement!

Congratulations to Life Sciences student Vitalii Pavlenko, who has been named a Global Winner in The Global Undergraduate Awards 2026!

Thousands of undergraduate students apply for the annual awards, which are judged by a panel of international academics and industry leaders.

Vitalii’s submission, in the Life Sciences category, was selected as the top submission worldwide.

He said, “Receiving the Global Winner award is a great honour, and I am very grateful to everyone who made this project possible.

"My time in the lab was one of the most rewarding parts of my undergraduate degree and gave me the opportunity to explore questions about chromosome organisation using advanced imaging approaches.”

After graduating this summer with a BSc (Hons) in Biological Sciences, Vitalii continues his higher education at the University, undertaking an MSc by Research within the Faculty of Life Sciences.

Congratulations again, Vitalii - we can't wait to see what you do next!

Meet Our Graduate: Alyssa

Congratulations to Alyssa, who graduated this summer with a BSc (Hons) in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, a joint degree delivered in partnership with the National University of Singapore (NUS). As a student on this unique international programme, Alyssa has the special honour of graduating twice – once from Dundee and once from NUS.

During her studies, Alyssa completed her Honours project in the Cossar Lab within the Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation. She said, “Throughout the project, I had the opportunity to develop a range of new research techniques, learn about current advances in the field, and gain invaluable hands-on laboratory experience.”

Alyssa’s achievements were recognised with the Sir James Black Award for Outstanding Achievement, presented in recognition of overall excellence in academic performance during the 2025/26 academic session. A fantastic accomplishment – well done, Alyssa!

Reflecting on her experience, Alyssa said, “I am incredibly grateful to National University of Singapore for giving me the opportunity to be part of such a unique joint degree programme. It has been an unforgettable experience that has shaped both my academic and personal development.”

We're delighted to welcome the first cohort of learners onto the Foundation Apprenticeship in Scientific Technologies, delivered in partnership with Perth & Kinross Council. This exciting collaboration provides young people with hands-on experience of scientific research and innovation while developing the skills needed for future careers.

Partnership working is at the heart of this programme. Working together as major education providers and employers in the region we can help inspire the next generation of talent, strengthen pathways into higher education and employment, and support employers to develop the skilled workforce of the future. We look forward to seeing what our learners achieve throughout the year.

What great news! For our subjects, the Guardian UK University Guide 2027 has ranked us as follows:

- Biology, 12th in the UK
- Biomedical Science, 8th in the UK

For employability, 83% of UK Biomedical Science and Biology graduates find graduate-level jobs, or are in further study at Professional or HE level, within 15 months of graduation.

Excited to be welcoming our newest students to campus this week as Welcome kicks off... especially as we've just been ranked 21st uni in the UK in The Guardian University Guide 2027!

It's a rise of five places, making us joint 4th in Scotland, and takes into account a range of measures including student satisfaction as reported in the National Student Survey (NSS).
