Promoting activities in an area of high deprivation and social issues. The vision of Artsocial is to break down to the barriers to understanding the language of visual art so people intuitively grasp meanings and insights and this flows naturally just as people use and know the language of words. With an authentic “artist/artsocialist” channelling the group’s ideas, we shall lay new paths for the artist in all of us. Artsocial Dundee believes citizens have the right to have both a participatory and experiential access to art. Moreover, research literature demonstrates that there is a desire among those living on low incomes to participate in the arts.
1. The first priority for Artsocial Dundee is acquiring via community asset transfer of the former squash court/ pavilion at Finlathen Park opposite Pitkerro Drive. Artsocial Dundee will build its base from Linlathen and Mid Craigie. Nine out of ten households in this area live in the severest poverty in Scotland (poorest 5% of Scottish datazones 2012 SIMD). Thus, there is a great need for an innovative transformational change programme.
2. The objectives of the initiative are to provide a community space and a professional gallery to deliver community art programmes and to unlock members’ creativity. By tapping into this creativity, research shows it can transform aspirations, attainment, wellbeing, skills and life chances.
