The SNP government’s rhetoric can’t hide the reality of major cuts to colleges over many years. Funding has been reduced by almost a fifth in the last five years alone. Colleges are vital to the future of the economy and for helping people get the skills they need for good, well-paid jobs. They need to be given the priority they deserve.

For the past 25 years, I have had the privilege of being a lecturer in dance (performing arts) at Dundee and Angus College. It is with saddness and growing concern that staff witness the diminishing value placed on the skills, knowledge and love that define our profession. I do not share the belief that what we do is no longer needed- but sadly that view is gaining ground. Throughout my career I have worked alongside exceptional students, colleagues and industry professionals, and have been honoured to contribute in some small way to the legacy of The Space and the Scottish School of Contemporary Dance (now DAPA). Institutions like the Space have nurtured creativity, discipline, and resilience in countless young artists.
While the current challenges may not alter my own path or those of my colleagues in the dance department, they threaten the future of the next generation of Scottish artists. Without urgent government support and a unified stand, we risk losing part of our cultural and educational landscape. I urge you to stand with us. 💫 In residence: Evie Gallagher & Sarah Barr 💫

This morning we welcomed Evie & Sarah into the studio to begin their first residency with The Work Room!

In this joint residency they will be looking at the idea of “the space between” for a potential screen-based piece — exploring the gaps between thoughts, people and movement. Through experimenting with improvisation and film, they’ll explore how playing with their expectations of space can shape how they move and relate to their surroundings, themselves and each other.
