It’s just four weeks until the 47th TB Macaulay Lecture, hosted in partnership with the Macaulay Development Trust. ⏳

Join us at the National Museums Scotland on October 21 to hear from Professor Frank Biermann, founder of the global Earth System Governance research alliance and winner of the prestigious Volvo Environment Prize. 🏆

A leading scholar of global sustainability, Professor Biermann will explore how accelerating climate impacts, geopolitical tensions, democratic backsliding and persistent inequalities have rendered traditional approaches to environmental governance insufficient. 🌍

His lecture will outline how planetary politics offers a fresh perspective for understanding and navigating the profound transformations shaping our future, and how plurilateral coalitions of like minded countries can succeed in a world where global consensus is increasingly difficult to achieve.

🎟️ Free tickets for this fascinating lecture are still available and can be reserved via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-47th-tb-macaulay-lecture-with-professor-frank-biermann-tickets-1987503155440?aff=oddtdtcreator

The Hutton is set to lead a £2.7 million project to accelerate climate adaptation in Sphagnum moss, supporting peatland carbon storage, biodiversity and water retention. 💧

Funded through the Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) Accelerated Adaptation programme, the FutureMoss project will identify and develop new varieties of Sphagnum that are more resilient to drought and changing weather patterns. ☀️

The two‑year project brings together researchers from the Hutton, the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology - UKCEH and the University of Dundee. 🤝

By helping peatlands adapt to future environmental conditions, the project aims to support some of Scotland’s most important natural assets for carbon storage, biodiversity and water management.

A new review from Hutton researchers has highlighted the impacts microplastics can have on soils, crops and livestock health.

Published in CABI Reviews, the review catalogued academic work on microplastics worldwide between 2021 and 2025. It shows that microplastics can influence crop production, nutrient cycling and livestock health, among other effects.

The review also demonstrates that these impacts depend on environmental conditions, as well as the concentration, composition, size and shape of the microplastics involved.

It was a pleasure to welcome Melanie Ward MP, Under‑Secretary of State for Scotland and MP for Cowdenbeath & Kirkcaldy, to our Invergowrie campus. 🎉

She toured our labs, the International Barley Hub (IBH) and the Barley Field Centre with NFU Scotland President Andrew Connon, former IBH Chair and Hutton honorary fellow George Lawrie, Hutton Chief Executive Professor Colin Campbell and IBH deputy director Sarah McKim. 🔬

Together, they discussed the Tay Cities Region Deal and other region deals, climate adaptation, food and energy security, crops for the future and wider economic opportunities.🌾

Thanks for visiting – we hope you found the meeting as enjoyable and productive as we did!

We’re proud to share that the Hutton is part of PROCEED, a major new €5.5 million Horizon Europe project that will strengthen farm profitability and Europe’s livestock‑feed resilience by boosting the production and use of home‑grown protein crops. 🐄

Working with 20 partners across 12 countries, PROCEED will support growers, processors and livestock farmers to develop more sustainable, climate‑resilient and economically viable feed systems. The project will focus on grain and forage legumes to reduce reliance on imported protein feeds like soybean meal. 🫘

The Hutton will help establish PROCEED’s network of 11 regional Practice Hubs and will lead work on the UK hub, connecting farmers, processors, feed businesses and researchers with real‑world pilot studies. 📋

With European agriculture facing more frequent droughts, heatwaves and flooding, home‑grown protein crops can play a vital role in building resilient feed systems, improving soils and supporting biodiversity. 🌳
