Hello Planning Students! And any others who may be interested....

We are looking for enthusiastic student volunteers to help with the Transformations2017 Conference .
http://www.transformations2017.org/ This provides a wonderful opportunity to attend a major international conference and engage with internationally renowned scholars without having to pay the registration fee.

Volunteers need to be available on 14th August for a familiarisation day. The conference runs from the 29th August to the 1st of September 2017 so you will need to be available for both day and evening events over these 4 days. We will endeavour to enable volunteers to attend the Keynote talks and sessions they have an interest in, they will also be able to take part in a Mass Transformative Practice Event.

THE DUNDEE AFTERNOON LECTURES
Mapping Dundee and its environs – past, present and future
by Chris Fleet
Senior Maps Curator, National Library of Scotland
Wednesday, 1 March 2017,
2:15-3.30pm, Admission £2
D’Arcy Thompson Lecture Theatre, Tower Bldg, University of Dundee
Hosted by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society—Dundee Group

This fully illustrated talk will take a fascinating journey through selected maps of Dundee and its hinterland from the 16th century to the present day, based on the rich collections of the National Library of Scotland. It will particularly look at the background to these maps, who made them and why, in order to explain something of their style and content. We will explore recent work at the Library to make these historic maps available online, and the use of technologies such as georeferencing and 3D overlays, to understand and visualise them better, with a brief look at the growing collections of born-digital mapping that the Library is receiving.
Speaker: Chris Fleet is a Fellow of RSGS and Senior Maps Curator at the National Library of Scotland where he has worked since 1994, primarily on digital mapping and on the NLS maps website. He has researched and spoken widely on these topics, and is the co-author of the highly acclaimed, ‘Scotland: Mapping the Nation’, ‘Edinburgh: Mapping the City’ and ‘Scotland: Mapping the Islands’.

Designing Places Student Competition 10/02/2017

Calling all built environment students… & Uni Dundee Planners - contact Anne Cu***ng about the travel subsidy.

DESIGNING PLACES STUDENT COMPETITION 2017| INVITATION| One month to go!

This is an open invitation to all built environment students (whether studying planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, transport planning or engineering) to take part in our masterplanning competition designed to develop place-making skills in Scotland.

About the competition
The masterplanning competition is a free one-day event hosted by the Scottish Government. This year we will be joined by Anderson Bell Christie Architects and JM Architects. It will mark the 8th Designing Places Award in the format of a ‘learning’ masterplanning class. The emphasis will be on interaction and working across disciplines. Students who’ve participated, in previous years, have said that the day has proved valuable for their course work. The link below gives you a flavour of the day and last year’s winning team https://blogs.gov.scot/planning-architecture/2016/11/09/student-competition/

Designing Places Student Competition

On Thursday February 16th John McNairney, the Scottish Government's Chief Planner and Head of Planning and Architecture Division, will be visiting the University to talk to our students. His visit is in the context of the current Review of the Scottish Planning System, so this represents an important opportunity to hear the latest news on Government thinking - and perhaps to ask some pertinent questions.

Tutors of UP modules will be adjusting the timetabled classes to make it possible for all our students to attend - so whether you are a single or joint honours student, post-grad or just taking a module or two as part of your MA, please join us in Dalhousie LT1 from 1.00-3.00 next Thursday. (if you have a scheduled class with another discipline within the MA, ask your tutor in advance if you can be excused in order to participate in this one-off opportunity).

To check out the Review of the Scottish Planning System, visit http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Built-Environment/planning/Review-of-Planning

Review of the Scottish Planning System The Programme for Government 2015-2016, announced our intention to “review the planning system to increase delivery of high quality housing developments, by delivering a quicker more accessible and efficient process.”

Congratualtions to Katy Rodger, here receiving the Town & Country Planning Association (Scotland) prize for the best overall performace in her Spatial Planning MSc. Her specialist pathway was Sustainable Urban Design.
Not just a piece of paper - she gets a £500 cheque as well - nice!

As some of you know, there have been quite a few changes for TRP and ENSU over the summer. Firstly, we’ve formally merged with Architecture as Architecture and Urban Planning – but don’t worry, this changes nothing as far as you degree pathways are concerned. You’ll still be graduating with you degree of MA Town & Regional Planning or MA Environmental Sustainability (or your original joint degree title), or MSc in Spatial Planning +. For those of you looking for your new modules on MyDundee or on the timetable, all undergraduate TP and SU modules have been recoded – they now all start with UP, but you will find that the module names are still the same.

The biggest change is that we have moved house, and are now based in Matthew Building. We have an area on Level 6, at the rear of the building. You can reach it in two ways: the first is by coming in the front door on Perth Road (on Level 1), taking the lift to the 6th floor and then following the corridor on your right for the full length of the building – the staff offices and student bases are to your left at the end. Alternatively, you can come in the back door (on Level 5) and then take either the stairs to your right or the lift which is straight ahead through the double door. If you’ve taken the stairs, our rooms are straight ahead – exiting the lift, turn to your left.

If you’ve already been in Matthew Building, you will know that there is a swipe-card security system to access areas beyond the Level 5 lecture theatres. Your matriculation card should do the trick – if not, please ask at Reception at the Perth Road entrance. The two new student rooms have keypad locks – ask a member of staff for the code once you are here.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you for the new academic year – and we’re organising a ‘house warming’ get-together for all our students and staff on Wednesday 14th September at 1 pm in our new student base. Join us for mocktails and a bite to eat, get together with old friends and make some new ones!
