3D Creative Workshops is a well-equipped multi-disciplinary design studio and workshop focussed on developing products. We aim to design and prototype aesthetically pleasing functional products that are sustainable in terms of material usage, manufacturing process, lifecycle and disposal. The origins of 3D Creative Workshops lie in the interaction between the goldsmithing craft, interior product design, mixed media manufacturing and 3D printing technology. These experiences gained within industrial and academic environments now benefit from the 3D modelling and 3D printing research that date back to 2001.

While 3D Printing is an enormous stride forward for manufacturing it also reveals a potential to negatively impact on social conditions when linked with other so-called disruptive technologies, robotics, artificial intelligence etc. This realisation gave cause to evaluate 3DCW’s ethos in respect to community and how best to alleviate any apparent negative effects. The decision to respond on an educational approach was inherent to 3DCW’s structure and subsequently led to the formation of these project based practical workshops.

These workshops have been designed to give participants an understanding of these technologies and to simultaneously offer insight into design thinking, a method of thinking that has been acknowledge as beneficial by varies organisation. Jennifer Kilian for example, digital vice president of McKinsey Digital Labs, defines design thinking as a methodology that is used to solve complex problems, and it’s a way of using systemic reasoning and intuition to explore ideal future states while first and foremost hold the end user or the customer in mind.

From a different perspective, historically when labor-saving technologies were introduced, new and higher value-adding jobs were created. This usually happens over the long term. However, productivity without the innovation that leads to the creation of higher value-added jobs results in unemployment and economic problems, and some new technologies such as the automation of knowledge work could significantly raise the bar on the skills that workers will need to bring to bear in order to be competitive. Bearing this potential disruption in mind, 3DCW projects are an exciting way for participants to gain insight into how these technologies might impact on their lives, their careers, organisations or communities so that with first-hand knowledge, appropriate decisions can be made to contribute towards positive change. For some it might just be an opportunity to experience Design and 3D Printing or to enhance portfolios for entry into college or university. Whatever the reason, one thing is certain, human activities will have drastically changed.
