Great to see the results from Hands Up Scotland Survey showing a rise in pupils cycling to school. Walking is still the most common way to travel to school, and is healthy, free and simple. Sadly the numbers of pupils walking is showing a decrease over time.

What does the school run look like for young people in Scotland today? 🚶‍♀️🚲🛴

Our latest Hands Up Scotland Survey results are now live and show cycling to school has reached its highest recorded levels since the survey began in 2008.

The findings also show active travel remains the most common way for pupils to get to school, but there’s still more to do to help children and families feel safe and confident choosing walking, wheeling and cycling for everyday journeys.

This year we had 32 Dumfries and Galloway schools signed up to take part in Big Walk and Wheel and most managed to participate with 27 schools logging journeys. This added up to a total of 17433 active journeys across the region with over 14000 walking and wheeling, almost 1800 cycling, and nearly 1500 scooting.

The remaining journeys were made by ASN pupils who couldn't make an active journey to school but were able to participate in an active journey during the school day. In the UK as a whole, over 2.4 million journeys were logged for the challenge with over 3/4 of a million children participating.

Some of our local schools did particularly well in the national leaderboards.

Langholm Primary School were 20th in UK and 3rd in Scotland for the medium primary school category with 91.46% of pupils travelling actively.
St Michael's Primary School were 47th in UK and 5th in Scotland for the medium primary schools with 85.91% travelling actively.
St Teresa's RC Primary School were 24th in UK and 10th in Scotland in the small primary school category with 75% travelling actively.
St Columba's RC Primary School were 32nd in UK and 15th in Scotland for small primary schools with 70% travelling actively.

From park adventures to pedal power, pupils showed just how fun active travel can be when the whole school gets active together 🚶 👩‍🦽 🚴

Tracey, Principal Teacher shared:

"As part of Big Walk and Wheel, all 150 pupils at Loreburn Primary enjoyed a fantastic morning exploring local parks and walking together, sparking so much enthusiasm that they’re already asking when they can do it again.

Next year we will plan a new walking route for children to explore their local community during Big Walk and Wheel week."
