On Friday 3rd July, we were invited to attend the 70th Gold Award Celebrations for the Duke of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

The celebrations recognised over 600 young people from across Scotland who have shown extraordinary perseverance, creativity and resilience to achieve their Gold DofE in schools, community organisations, and youth groups.

Since its conception in 1956, the DofE has reached over 15.5 million young people globally, with more than 8.8 million young people having started a DofE Award in the UK – enough people to fill Murrayfield Stadium 131 times.

In the last year alone, nearly 34,000 young people in Scotland were doing their DofE, with participants giving more than 379,000 hours of volunteering in their communities – worth an estimated total value of £2.9m.

Dumfries and Galloway Council are proud to deliver the Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels across Secondary Schools and Open Centres delivered by the Youth Work Service (in Mid Galloway and Dumfries). The Dumfries and Galloway delegation included Dr Gillian Brydson (Executive Director for Education, Skills and Community Wellbeing), Harry Hay (Head of Service for Thriving Communities), Gary Kirkpatrick (Dumfries and Galloway DofE Award Association Chairman) and Teo Calimac (Dumfries & Galloway Youth Council Chairperson and current DofE participant).

Between June 23rd - 30th, 7 young people from across Scotland came together to take part in their Gold Youth Beatz Residential as part of their Duke of Edinburgh's Award!

Nori, Ciara, Lily, Delisha, Cheyash, Ewa and Natalia contributed over 300 hours towards the build, delivery and take-down of YouthBeatz Dumfries Festival. They were an excellent group, working with the wider team of young and adult volunteers and Youth Work staff to put on Scotland's largest free music festival. Starting their week as strangers, the experience focussed on working as part of a team and putting the groups communication and leadership skills to the test. Just to mix things up, the group got to experience the full spectrum of Scottish weather!

Every year, we deliver the Gold Award Residential experience for young people from Dumfries and Galloway and wider Scotland, providing an affordable (or free for D&G participants) and unique experience in practical event skills, and team-working.

Special thanks also go out to Simone, a former Youth Beatz Gold Residential participant (who has now returned to volunteer with the Festival for her 3rd year!) and Zoe, our Wider Achievement Worker who has a lead role in co-ordinating the DofE in Dumfries and Galloway for Dumfries and Galloway Council for supporting the group over the week!
