Turtle Tots is an innovative and unique swimming programme, which begins during pregnancy and continues once your baby is born. Mums-to-be can join our Turtle Tums aquanatal yoga classes which help you prepare for pregnancy and birth. Once your baby is born you can join our Turtle Tots and Turtle Toddlers programme which teaches you how to teach your child to swim in a relaxed and sociable environ

ment. All our programmes have been devised in conjunction with a personal trainer to ensure that mums (and dads!) receive a work-out while swimming with their babies to help with post-natal fitness and well-being. Do you have a little one aged 15–26 months around Glasgow’s West End? We currently have six spaces in our Saturday morning Sea Lion class at Cleveden Secondary School.
At this stage, toddlers are becoming more active, curious and independent, so our Sea Lion lessons give them plenty of opportunities to move, splash and explore the water with their grown-up beside them. Through songs, games and repeated activities, they’ll continue building their confidence while developing early swimming and water-safety skills.

The class runs at 9.40am on Saturdays, making it a lovely way to start the weekend before the rest of the day takes over. You’ll enjoy focused time together, they’ll burn off some of that toddler energy and, with any luck, you may even get a good nap afterwards!

There are currently six places available, so if you’ve been thinking about starting swimming lessons, this is a great opportunity to join the class without waiting for another term.

If your toddler runs everywhere, climbs everything and only listens when it suits them, you might be wondering how on earth they’ll manage a swimming lesson.

The good news is that lessons for little ones don’t rely on them sitting quietly or concentrating for long stretches. We use songs, repetition, play and plenty of movement to keep them involved, with short activities that suit the way toddlers naturally learn.

In fact, energetic children often love having the freedom to kick, splash, reach and move through the water. At the same time, they begin to learn important pool routines, such as waiting for a signal before entering, listening to the grown-up supporting them and getting in and out safely.

They won’t follow every instruction perfectly and some weeks they may be more interested in doing their own thing- that’s toddler life, and our teachers are very used to it. We don’t expect perfectly behaved little swimmers; we help each child join in and learn at their own pace.

If you’re at home with a baby or toddler around Drymen, Balfron, Killearn, Strathblane or Loch Lomond, our Wednesday morning swimming classes could be just the thing to break up your week.

We know the days with little ones can sometimes feel very long, especially when you’ve already exhausted the usual walks, toys and coffee-shop trips by 10am! Turtle Tots gives you a reason to get out of the house, enjoy some focused time together and meet other parents, while your little one gradually becomes happier and more confident in the water.

Our friendly parent-and-child classes at Buchanan Arms are suitable for babies and young children from six months, with selected spaces still available on Wednesday mornings. Everything is taught through songs, play and age-appropriate activities, so you’ll both be supported throughout the lesson- even if it’s your first time in the pool together.

The swimming lesson is the easy part…it’s getting everyone changed afterwards that can feel like a military operation. 😂

What do you pack? Who gets dressed first? How do you work around naps and feeds? And what happens when your tired baby starts crying just as you’re standing there in a wet swimming costume?

We’ve answered four of the questions parents often worry about before their first baby swimming lesson for you.
Our biggest tip? Keep it simple and don’t expect everything to run perfectly.

Babies will occasionally arrive tired. Feeds won’t always fall at the ideal time. Someone will probably cry, and you may forget something you were certain you packed.

None of that means the lesson is ruined- and nobody in the changing room is judging you. We’ve all been there!

You don’t need to be a confident swimmer to help your child become one. We know that getting into the pool can feel daunting when you’re not particularly comfortable in the water yourself.

But you won’t be expected to swim lengths, go underwater or know what you’re doing before you arrive. Your Turtle Tots teacher will guide you through the whole lesson, showing you how to hold and support your little one safely while you enjoy the water together.

And there’s absolutely no judgement. Plenty of parents join us because they don’t feel confident around water and want something different for their child.
You don’t have to arrive feeling brave and ready for anything. Your confidence can grow alongside theirs, one lesson at a time.

Around 1 in 4 Scottish children couldn’t swim a length of a pool by the time they left primary school.

That finding came from a 2023 evaluation of school swimming provision in Scotland- and it’s a reminder that we can’t always assume children will learn to swim through school.
The Scottish Government has since announced plans for a universal swimming offer for primary-aged children, which is a positive step. But school provision and regular swimming lessons aren’t quite the same thing.

Starting young gives children time to become familiar with the water, build confidence and develop their skills gradually- long before they’re expected to swim a full length.
It isn’t about trying to create an Olympic swimmer at four years old. It’s about making water feel familiar and helping them develop skills that can stay with them as they grow.

Our Turtle Tots lessons are available for babies and children from around 12 weeks to five years across selected venues in West Glasgow, Renfrewshire, West Dunbartonshire and Drymen.

Buchanan Arms currently has a little more availability in classes for babies and children from around six months old.

Our lessons are suitable for babies, toddlers and preschool children, with each child learning at a pace that feels right for them.

Some reasons you might not have thought about when booking swimming lessons for your baby or toddler…

One of the biggest is this: you’re helping them build skills for the years when you won’t always be right beside them.
When they’re little, you’re the one holding their hand at the pool, the beach or beside the water.
But one day, they’ll be older. They’ll be out with friends. They’ll make their own decisions.

And being safe around water isn’t only about whether someone can swim. Open water can bring cold water shock, currents, tides, changing depths and hazards you simply can’t see.
That’s why we want children to grow up not just enjoying the water, but understanding it, respecting it and feeling confident enough to respond calmly.

The skills start small- holding on, turning, floating, listening, learning how their body feels in the water- but they’re part of something much bigger.

Swimming lessons are for now. Water confidence and awareness are for life.

A big good luck to all the little ones heading off to Primary 1 over the next few days! 🎒✏️
We know there’ll be lots of excitement, a few nerves (from the grown-ups too!) and probably plenty of photos at the front door. 🥹

It’s especially lovely knowing that some of the little swimmers we’ve watched grow in confidence in the pool over the years are now heading off on their next big adventure.
And good luck to all the big brothers and sisters heading back to school too- we hope you have a brilliant first day and a lovely year ahead.

The school bags are coming back out, the holidays are nearly over (or already over for some of you!) and suddenly we’re all remembering what day of the week it is again. 😅

And we’re back in the pool too!
Our new Turtle Tots term is underway, and we can’t wait to see lots of familiar little faces back in the water- as well as welcome some brand new swimmers. 💚

If you’ve been thinking about adding swimming to your weekly routine, we still have limited spaces available in selected classes across West Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Loch Lomond and Drymen.

Fun, water confidence, important safety skills and a little bit of one-to-one time together each week.
