Our first outing after 3 months of inactivity, we visited The north end of Loch Etive. It is dominated by the view up Glen Etive to the twin mountains of Buachaille Etive Mor and, to its west, Buachaille Etive Beag. The north ends of these twin ridges dominate the upper parts of Glen Coe, but from the south, they appear as twin cones. Glen Etive has been used as the backdrop to many movies, among them Braveheart and Skyfall. For the Outlander fans, Glencoe may be familiar with the opening credits of season 1, with its epic mountain peaks, rivers, and waterfalls. The Pass of Glencoe is surrounded by towering mountains, the Hidden Valley, where stolen cattle were hidden by the Clan MacDonald, the soaring cliffs of the Three Sisters, home to the mythical Ossian’s Cave, and Signal Rock, where legend has it that the sign was given for redcoat soldiers to begin the infamous massacre. The history of the people who once made their home in this awe-inspiring glen, before Jacobite loyalties and the Clearances saw them replaced with sheep and deer. Just south of Glencoe lies Glen Etive, an incredible U-shaped glen, which is home to red deer. The name Etive is believed to mean "little ugly one" from the Gaelic goddess associated with the loch.
