Today we celebrate far more than examination results.
To our Year 13 students, congratulations.
The grades received today matter. They represent a great deal of effort over a long period of time. There were early starts, coursework deadlines, revision sessions that felt endless and moments when carrying on seemed difficult. We are pleased to see that reflected in this year’s outcomes, with an increase in the average point score from last year, a significant increase A*-B performance and 17% of grades awarded at A*-A.
Every student who has achieved the results they were hoping for has every reason to feel proud today.
Results day also reminds us that there is much about a young person that never appears on a certificate.
This year group has left its mark on the school. We have seen students give up their time for others, help younger pupils settle in, represent the school on the stage and on the sports field, and quietly support friends through days that were far harder than most people realised.
Those things count.
Exam results tell us how students performed in a set of assessments. They do not tell the story of every setback overcome along the way. They do not capture the student who kept showing up when confidence was low. They do not show the conversations, encouragement and friendship that helped others succeed.
That is why today is about more than grades.
We are proud of the outcomes achieved by this year group. We are equally proud of where those outcomes are leading.
Many students will continue their education at universities across the country, with almost 40% of applicants securing places at highly competitive institutions as part of the Russell Group universities. Some will go on to study subjects including Engineering, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, and Social Work. Others are beginning degree apprenticeships or moving into apprenticeships with local employers such as Mazak and Barrie Beard and onto planned gap years around the world
What matters is not whether those journeys look the same. They don't. What matters is that each student has found a path that is right for them and is ready for what comes next.
For most students, today will bring celebration, relief and excitement. For some, there may be disappointment or uncertainty. If your results are not what you hoped for, please remember that one day does not decide the rest of your life. We will continue to support you. Some of the most rewarding destinations are reached by routes nobody planned at the start.
Thank you to the families who have stood alongside our students throughout their time in the sixth form, and to the staff who have challenged them, supported them and never stopped believing in them.
Most of all, thank you to our Year 13 students.
When we look back on this year group, we will remember the contribution you made to this school and the way you treated those around you. Those things matter long after results day has passed.
Be proud of what you have achieved today. Above all, be proud of the person who achieved it.
