you have learned and you have grown.
Tiny chairs give way to desks,
book reports and spelling tests.
So take off now, spread your wings,

Our environment is very important to us here at Fountain farm and we are always curious to find out who is living deep within our woodland area, we are fortunate to have a local expert who comes to visit us and keeps track of the wildlife we have, below are his findings
Here is a summary of birds seen and ringed at Fountain Farm in 2021
Species seen: barn owl, blackcap*, black-headed gull, bullfinch, buzzard, carrion crow, chaffinch, chiffchaff*, collared dove, common gull, dunnock, fieldfare~, goldcrest, goldfinch, greenfinch#, green sandpiper, grey heron, grey wagtail, greylag goose, herring gull#, house martin#, house sparrow#, jackdaw, kestrel, kingfisher, lapwing#, lesser whitethroat*, linnet#, little egret, magpie, mallard, marsh tit#, meadow pipit, moorhen, pheasant, pied wagtail, pink-footed goose, red kite, red-legged, partridge, redpoll, redwing~, reed bunting, robin, rook, siskin, skylark#, sparrowhawk, starling#, stock dove, swallow*, swift*#, tawny owl, teal, treecreeper, tree sparrow#, whitethroat*, willow warbler*, woodcock~, wren, yellowhammer# and yellow wagtail*#.
* = summer visitor from Africa
~ = winter visitor from Iceland and Scandinavia
# = red list species i.e, birds of greatest environmental concern whose population has decreased by >50% in the last 25 years and/or breeding range has contracted by up to 50% in the last 25 years.
So more than half the species on your land are long distance migrants and/or red list species which demonstrates how important your habitat management efforts are!
Birds ringed: blackbird 7, chaffinch 2, goldcrest 2 plus 1 retrap^, great tit 2, long-tailed tit 1, robin 2, song thrush 1, swallow 3 adults plus 9 pulli and wren 2.
^ = first ringed as an adult on 17 April 2020 which means it must be four or more years old, a very good age for a goldcrest.
Butterflies: common blue, gatekeeper, holly blue, large white, orange tip, peacock, red admiral, ringlet, small white, speckled wood and small tortoiseshell. Now you have thinned out some trees and let more light in I would expect to see more butterfly species next year.
To help keep our wildlife happy and to continue to do our part for the environment we have begun our "big tree plant 2022" Neil and Christine with their help of friends and neighbours so far have planted over 120 trees! Oak and horse chestnuts
Throughout the next few weeks the children will be out in the woods to help plant even more.
Its important for the children to learn all about their environment and how we can all play a part in helping it thrive no matter how old you are
here are a couple of the babies exploring very early mark making, we made some thick paint changed them into some vests and let them explore. some marks made it to paper but mostly they just wanted to feel the paint with their hands and feet...... and some their face! we love some messy fun
The children in the Beech room have been helping to decorate the Christmas tree. We have also had some visitors to nursery that have left us some treats.
