This Sunday is the longest day of the year, and we're spending it the way I think it's meant to be spent.
I think about this a lot - how much of what we do has lost its "why." We mark days on a calendar without knowing they used to mean something. People have been pausing on this exact day for thousands of years, watching the light, gathering round a fire, because it mattered to them. And when I learned why - when I started tracing it back - everything about doing it myself made more sense. It stopped being "an event" and started feeling like picking up a thread that's been there the whole time, just waiting for someone to pick it back up.
That's what this land has taught me, really. We're not separate from nature - we ARE nature. Same elements, same cycles, same pull towards fire and water and earth that every person before us felt too.
So this Sunday, we're not just doing activities. We're touching all four elements, properly:
Fire - the dawn sauna, and the fire we'll sit round as the sun goes down.
Water - toes in the river, because nothing clears your head like cold water on bare skin.
Air - slow breaths, sauna steam, the kind of breathing you forget you've forgotten how to do.
Earth - bare feet on the ground, all day, because shoes are a very recent human invention and the ground misses us!
No phones glued to hands, no rushing from one thing to the next. Just us, the land, the fire, and a day that our ancestors would absolutely recognise.
Come and remember with us.
