What better motto could there be for a school overlooking Dover, its castle and its port than "Fiat Lux" - "Let There Be Light"?

Dover Grammar School for Boys

The schools motto, appropriately is Fiat Lux, meaning “Let there be light”. In 2018-19 the Headteach

A huge well done to Ted A., Kaemon G., Leon W., Nico S. and Davis Z. in Year 9, who recently attended three Mathematics
Masterclasses with the Royal Institution at the University of Kent!

They explored exciting maths beyond the classroom, including probability, fractals, topology and game theory, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

We’re so proud of the way they represented the school and embraced this fantastic opportunity!

We are proud to celebrate the excellent achievements of our students in this year’s UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge.

Our students earned an impressive total of 39 certificates, including 7 Gold, 14 Silver, and 18 Bronze awards. This is a fantastic accomplishment and reflects the hard work, enthusiasm, and problem-solving skills of all who took part. Congratulations to every participant on their success.

We are especially pleased to recognise five students who have been invited to take part in the prestigious follow-on competition: George F (Year 7), and Thomas H, Zac S, Finley P, and Ashley M (Year 8). This is a remarkable achievement, and we wish them the very best of luck in the next stage.

Well done to all involved!

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dover Town Council for their very generous £500 funding to support our school garden. The funding has enabled us to purchase essential gardening tools, vegetable plants and compost, helping us to develop the space into a productive and welcoming environment for learning.

A growing club of enthusiastic students now helps to care for the garden, taking part in planting, watering and maintaining the raised beds. The project is already having a positive impact, giving pupils hands‑on experience and encouraging teamwork, responsibility and a love of the outdoors. We have a selection of vegetables and bee friendly flowers in our garden, including peas, broad beans, tomatoes, lavender and marigolds.

We are extremely grateful to Dover Town Council for making this possible.

Over the Easter Holidays, 81 DGSB students from Year 8 to Year 11 visited Les Deux Alpes in France for our ski trip. It was an unforgettable experience, helped by glorious sunny weather throughout the week. The students threw themselves into their ski lessons with enthusiasm, making fantastic progress as their confidence grew on the slopes each day. By the end of the trip, many who had never skied before were cruising down the runs. The combination of expert instruction, clear skies, and breathtaking mountain views made every day on the slopes memorable.

Away from skiing, the students enjoyed a brilliant range of evening and off-slope activities that kept spirits high. There were lively games of laser tag, a delicious pizza and crepe night, a relaxing session at the swimming pool, and plenty of laughter in between. These activities gave everyone the chance to unwind, bond as a group, and make lasting memories.

Overall, the trip offered the perfect balance of learning, fun, and adventure, making it a huge success for all involved. Please see below for a snapshot of what a day on the ski trip looked like.

Over three memorable days at the start of April, 26 Year 9 and 10 students enjoyed a history trip to Washington DC. The visit began on Capitol Hill, where we explored the heart of American democracy. Whilst here, a protest outside the Supreme Court was witnessed as Donald Trump became the first ever President to sit in on a hearing. This was followed by a true American cultural experience in the evening by attending an NBA fixture between the Washington Wizards and the Philadelphia 76ers.

On day two we saw the White House, visited several of Washington’s powerful memorials, including the Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. These sites encouraged reflection on sacrifice and freedom. A particularly moving experience was our visit to Arlington Cemetery, where students observed the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, whilst also observing moments of reflection at the grave of John F Kennedy and the Lockerbie bombing memorial.

On the final day of the trip students explored several museums, including exhibits on American history, science, politics and culture. These hands‑on experiences deepened understanding and inspired curiosity, making the trip an engaging and educational success for all involved. The students had a jam packed fascinating tour of the nation’s capitol, and will have made memories to last a lifetime.
