Matsumachi's Jack Taylor kept busy training through his summer holidays, travelling up to the famous Camberley Judo Club in Surrey for their annual Junior Summer Residential course.

Camberley JC have run a full-time judo program for nearly 40 years and its members have gone on to world and Olympic glory. JAck faced a tough few days training with some of the country's best young judoka under the watchful eye of former Commonwealth Games champion and Olympian, Danny Williams.

We're looking forward to seeing Jack back on the mat with us when we return on Thursday 3 September!

As we break from judo for August, Rohid Otmani achieved a magnificent double at the Bodmin Cornish Wrestling Tournament.

Firstly Rohid won the Cornish Novices Championship with a very controlled, technical performance including a back in the final and, at the end of the day, won the overall open with another back in a very even and well contested contest.

Rohid's success is down to his consistent training ethic, rarely missing a class be it on the judo mat, the sambo mat or outside on the grass when Cornish wrestling.

Congratulations Rohid!

We are closed during August for judo but if you'd like to try something different, then why not try our Cornish Wrestling group on Thursdays 7 - 8.30pm at Littledown LC park. Meet by the cricket pavilion.

Junior club members were successful in their grading examinations in July with Jack Taylor, Logan Prior and Louis Gillespie progressing up through the orange belt ranks to 9th mon whilst Tommy Annetts adding another stripe to his yellow belt moving up to 5th mon.

Ruby Prior changed belt colour being promoted to yellow belt 4th mon as twin sisters Evie and Poppy Prior along with Saul Stacey-Jackson moved up to red belt 3rd mon.

A great end to the term as the club closes for August ready for reopening on Thursday 3 September.

Congratulations to Ben Grant who retained his Cornish Wrestling Middleweight belt at St Mawgan on Saturday. Ben scored no less than 3 backs during the afternoon, a very rare feat indeed.

Fresh from his gold medal at the German Open Sambo Tournament, Tom Humphrey made a successful return to Judo competition winning six out of six contests to take gold at the Midlands Open.

No medal for Gemma Mill on this occasion but good experience gained in a very strong event.

Superb results from Karlsruhe, Germany where Tom Humphrey and Gemma Mill struck gold and silver respectively in the fierce heat of the German Open Sambo Championships.

Tom put together a string of impressive victories against opponents from Germany, Bulgaria and Bosnia to take his second international gold at +98k following gold in December's Lithuanian Open. The win makes up a little for his disappointment at the European Championships in Georgia in May where he lost against the Georgian former European Champion in a competitive match.

The German win puts Tom in a qualification position for next year's European Games.

Meanwhile, Gemma upset the form book at +80k, making a very impressive debut winning 9-1 technical superiority against Ukraine before losing by a similar score against her German opponent in the final.

Congratulations to six year-old Jackson Charnock who passed his first grading with flying colours last week.

The BJA sho grading syllabus is designed for judoka under eight years of age before they progress on to the mon system at eight.

Jackson demonstrated a number of throws and holding techniques and also showed a wide range of Japanese Judo vocabulary to achieve his first belt.

As a bonus, Jackson was also awarded the junior judoka of the class trophy for his excellent performance.
