Someone can say “I’m fine” while holding their breath through the pressure. They may want to be a good client, trust your expertise, or feel unsure whether they’re allowed to ask for something different.

This is where the quality of attention matters.

In Myofascial Energetic Release, we feel the tissue and notice how the person responds. A held breath or a movement away gives us a reason to pause and ask. The meaning comes through conversation.

“You can ask for less pressure.”
“We can stay here.”
“We can stop.”

Those words carry weight when our hands follow through.

For someone accustomed to enduring discomfort, having their preference heard and respected can be a meaningful part of the session.

How do we make room for an honest answer when we ask, “How does this feel?”

Posture may look still, but your body is making thousands of small adjustments to keep you upright.

Pressure shifts through the feet. Muscles change their tone. Fascia distributes tension. The eyes, inner ear and nervous system continuously read where you are in space and organize the next response.

Past injuries, repetitive movement, pain, fatigue and emotional states all influence this process. The body adapts intelligently, often moving effort away from one area and asking another to compensate. A shoulder lifts, the jaw tightens, the pelvis shifts or the breath becomes smaller. Eventually, the adaptation may feel like your natural posture.

This is why meaningful bodywork involves more than correcting individual parts. It helps the whole system recognize where support has been replaced by effort and where new movement has become possible.

Your posture is happening right now. Where in your body do you feel supported, and where do you feel yourself working to stay upright?

We often recognize alignment by its external appearance: shoulders back, chest lifted, spine straight. Yet the body can maintain that shape through considerable muscular effort.

When the shoulders are pulled into position, the abdomen is held tightly or the spine is kept rigid, the posture may appear “correct” while breathing, movement and sensation become restricted. Over time, this effort can feel so familiar that we stop recognizing it as tension.

Functional alignment is dynamic. The feet, pelvis, ribcage and head organize in relation to one another, allowing weight to move through the structure with greater ease. The body remains responsive rather than fixed. It can breathe, adapt to movement and return to balance without constant correction.

In Myofascial Energetic Release, we explore alignment from both the outside and the inside. Alongside observing physical structure, we pay attention to where someone braces, collapses, holds their breath or uses tension to create a sense of support. As these patterns become conscious, the body can begin to discover a more natural way of carrying itself.

When you stand upright, do you feel supported by your structure, or are your muscles working hard to keep you there?

Every anatomy book carries a quiet paradox.

To show us the body, it has to divide it: muscle from bone, fascia from muscle, one region from the next. The divisions give us names, orientation and precision. They also create borders that a living body keeps crossing.

A breath changes tension beyond the ribs. Load travels beyond the edge of a single muscle. Touch in one place can alter what becomes perceptible somewhere else. Structure, movement and sensation are continuously negotiating with one another.

This is where the map becomes practice.

In MER Inspiration, we study anatomy while learning to feel relationships: where tissue glides, where movement disappears, where effort is being borrowed, and where the body begins to find another option.

The names help us locate ourselves. The listening begins between them.

Many of us have learned to manage the breath: deepen it, slow it down, count it or consciously direct it. Yet spontaneous breathing emerges from something quieter: the body feeling supported enough to release unnecessary effort.

Through hands-on work, we can begin to notice the subtle places where the breath hesitates, changes direction or meets resistance. There is no ideal rhythm to impose. The practice is to listen, create space and allow the breath to reorganize from within.

In the Inspiration module, breath becomes a way of reading the body and meeting the patterns beneath conscious control. As awareness grows, new possibilities for movement, sensation and presence can emerge.

This October, Myofascial Energetic Release professional training comes to Portugal for the first time.

Join Ketu Bø for Inspiration: Opening the Breath, Thorax & Diaphragm, a six-day experiential training held from 2–7 October 2026 at Inner Sanctum in Vila Verde, Northern Portugal.

Open to bodyworkers, therapists and anyone drawn to experiencing this work in depth.

The breath often reveals where the body has stopped yielding.

The pelvis, diaphragm and abdominal wall work together as part of one responsive system. When the pelvis is held rigidly, breathing may become smaller, higher in the chest or feel as though it cannot fully travel through the body.

This holding can develop through posture, prolonged sitting, stress, emotional protection or simply years of moving in familiar ways. We may become so accustomed to it that it feels completely normal.

Try Ulla’s exploration without forcing a deeper breath. Place your hands on your lower abdomen and notice where the movement reaches naturally. Is there expansion through the belly and pelvis, or does the breath seem to stop somewhere along the way?

Begin with curiosity. What do you notice?

The pelvis is central to how we breathe, move, feel supported and meet the world. Discover the Centering module with True North Bodywork through the link in our bio.

What changes when you learn to feel what the body is telling you through your hands?

Myofascial Energetic Release is a deep, experiential form of bodywork that brings together fascia work, breath, movement and emotional awareness.

During this two-day introductory workshop, you will explore how tension and holding patterns shape the body and learn practical techniques that can support greater mobility, balance and self-regulation.

You will work with the quality of touch, body reading, the nervous system, practitioner posture and breathing, verbal guidance and client participation. The weekend is highly practical, with time to practice, receive and learn directly through your own experience.

Open to experienced bodyworkers and therapists, as well as those who are new to bodywork and curious about the possibilities of MER.

The pelvis connects the legs to the spine, transfers force through the body and influences posture, movement and breath. When it loses balance through tilt, rotation, elevation or restriction, the rest of the body begins to compensate, often creating tension or pain in the lower back, hips and even the neck.

But working with this area involves more than pelvic alignment.

The deep core supports coordination, stability and our ability to move with ease. The pelvis is also an area where chronic tension, protective patterns and emotional experience can be held.

Whether you talk clients through their patterns or work with your hands on a table, MER gives you a new layer to add: reading the body itself.

Fascia wraps around every muscle, organ and joint, one continuous web running through the whole body. Old patterns and stored trauma settle into that tissue long before a client can put words to what happened. Learning to feel it shift under your hands lets you catch things that talk, or a standard massage routine, would miss.

Picture a shoulder that's stayed tight for months no matter what you try, or the same pattern surfacing again and again until something finally clicks. Touch often gets there faster.

This training works for therapists who want to bring hands-on skill into their sessions, and for massage therapists and bodyworkers who want to go beyond routine techniques and start reading what the tissue is actually holding.
Practitioners who add MER describe it as a real shift in how they work. They start sensing things in a first session that used to take months to surface, and clients feel the difference too.

Spots are open for the next trainings. Full details in bio.

Why is one of our MER modules called Inspiration?

Inspiration literally means breathing in, and this module looks closely at what happens in the body when we inhale.

The diaphragm descends. The ribs expand. The thorax changes shape. The spine responds. Fascia adapts to this movement with every breath.

When mobility in the thorax, diaphragm, ribs or surrounding fascia is reduced, breathing patterns change too. Accessory muscles may take on extra work, the rib cage may move unevenly, and certain areas can stay under constant tension.

During the Inspiration module, we explore these relationships through Myofascial Energetic Release.

We work with the thorax, ribs, diaphragm and related fascial structures, while using breath to support movement and tissue response. As breathing mechanics improve, the work can reach areas that pressure alone may struggle to access.

Breath gives us information throughout a session: where movement is available, where the body is holding, and how the tissue responds as that pattern begins to change.

That relationship between breath, fascia and touch is at the heart of the Inspiration module.
