What happens when you know what you want to change in your coaching, but keep falling back into an old habit?

For Jitesh, it was the tendency to over-apologise — something small on the surface, but with an impact on his confidence and coaching presence.

In this ACC-level coaching demonstration, Jitesh works through that habit while exploring what it means to become more grounded and intentional as a coach.
It’s a useful watch for coaches working towards ICF ACC accreditation, but also for anyone who wants to reflect on their own coaching presence and the small habits that can shape a session.

We've been thinking about all the different ways coaching can live inside a school.
Not just in one room. Not just for one type of person.
A head teacher finally having someone to think out loud with. A form tutor asking better questions in a ten-minute check-in. An appraisal that actually feels like a conversation, not a verdict.
Coaching doesn't have to arrive all at once. Most schools I've seen meander into it. Trying one thing, stepping back, picking up something else a year later.
This carousel maps out some of the possibilities. It’s not a checklist, just a picture of what's out there, and what could be.
Swipe through, and tell us: which one feels most familiar to where you are right now?

Welcome to the coaching supervision demonstration playlist

There are many different ways to handle a coaching supervision session and in this playlist we are offering a demonstration of a few models, with different coaches. We don't believe there is a one size fits all for coaching supervision and there will be many many varieties of the ones that we are doing. Nevertheless it is a good starting point and a way for you to see coaching supervision in action. We have found very little coaching supervision material online so this may be one of the few ways you can observe supervision on video.

Explore the playlist and see coaching supervision in action.

Your first session with a coachee who's brand new to coaching — how do you begin?

It's a moment every coach faces at some point, and it rarely gets easier with experience: the person across from you has never been coached before. They don't fully know what coaching is, they're not sure what they're "allowed" to say, and trust hasn't been built yet — because there's been no time to build it.

In this episode of our coaching supervision demonstration playlist, we follow Ryan as he brings exactly this situation into supervision — a first session with a coachee new to coaching. But the conversation goes beyond "how do I set the right goals." It gets into something harder to pin down: how do you build genuine partnership with someone in those very first minutes, before trust has had any chance to form?
We don't believe there's a single right way to do supervision — and this video isn't offering one. It's simply a real, unfiltered look at the process, so you — whether you're a coach or a supervisor — can watch, reflect, and compare it to how you work.

Thank you to everyone who has come and listened to our first series of the Love Your Coaching podcast. Thanks too to the guests, and to the team who are putting the episodes out. As this series comes to an end, here's an episode that draws the theme of the series together, and gets us ready to close it.
Come along to listen and reflect on the question of the series "why do we all love our coaching?"

After weeks of conversations with coaches, leaders, HR directors, and coachees, Charlie takes a step back to reflect on what has really been happening beneath the surface of Series 1. Not the topics or the titles, but the common thread running through every episode. Again and again, the same truth shows up in different voices: coaching doesn’t create change because of clever questions or perfect techniques, but because of the conditions we create for people to think.

Across the series, we hear what happens when silence is allowed instead of rushed, when the coach resists the urge to fix, and when conversations are ended with intention rather than convenience. These moments may look small from the outside, but they are where confidence quietly rebuilds, where ownership returns, and where learning actually settles instead of slipping away.

Episode 12 closes Series 1 not with answers, but with space.
Space to reflect.
Space to notice.
Space to keep loving your coaching.

Episode 12 is out now.

One of the most overlooked coaching skills isn't asking better questions.
It's helping someone feel comfortable enough to begin.

For someone who is new to coaching, that first conversation shapes everything that follows. It's where expectations are explored, trust begins to develop, and both coach and client gain clarity about how they'll work together.

In this coaching demonstration, Ryan shares a thoughtful approach to contracting with someone who is completely new to coaching. Rather than seeing contracting as a process to get through, he shows how it can become the foundation for a strong and effective coaching relationship.
If you're developing your coaching practice, or simply curious about how experienced coaches approach these early conversations, we hope you'll find it valuable.

Are you ready to take your first step into coaching?

Our ILM Level 5 Effective Coaching programme is designed for leaders who are new to coaching, and want to build strong, practical foundations. We typically work with school leaders, department managers, and those beginning to explore coaching as part of their role or future career.
This programme takes you from the basics through to a confident, capable level of coaching practice. You’ll learn how to use core coaching skills, structure effective coaching conversations, and build strong relationships with your coaching clients.

We keep our training highly practical. You’ll spend time practising, reflecting, and developing your approach — not just learning theory. With small groups of up to 10 people, you’ll receive individual attention and ongoing support throughout the programme. The course runs across eight half-day webinars, alongside one-to-one support to help you achieve your qualification.
A coaching qualification doesn’t just develop your skills — it also gives you the credibility of being formally assessed, helping you stand out in your role or as you build your coaching practice.
If you’re looking for a structured, supportive way to begin your coaching journey, this could be the right place to start.

The first coaching structure we teach in training is the TEA approach.
Start with the Topic, to help understand what the coachee wants to work on.
Move to Exploring, to help them bring out facts, feelings and understand the scope of their issue. Hold back from solutions for the moment!
Then move to the Actions stage, helping them leave the session with clear next steps.

Suz is a middle leader in a school who brought a challenging issue to work through. She was able to use the time and the questions well to come up with her ideas and solutions.

If you're looking to develop your coaching skills, watch the demonstration to see how the TEA approach helps coachees explore challenges and identify their own next steps:

There’s a quiet moment near the end of Episode 11 where Charlie reflects on something simple, but deeply personal: why coaching has stayed with him for nearly two decades.
It isn’t about methods, credentials, or even outcomes. It’s about being surrounded by people who are thinking, growing, questioning, and choosing to show up differently — and being trusted to sit alongside them while they do. Coaching, for Charlie, is the work that never stops teaching him how to listen better, slow down, and notice what really matters.

This episode of Series 1 isn’t about teaching coaching. It’s about why, once it becomes part of your world, it’s very hard to let go.

Not sure whether the ILM Level 5 or Level 7 coaching qualification is right for you?
This is one of the most common questions we’re asked. Choosing the right programme can feel confusing, particularly when both options offer valuable pathways for developing your coaching skills.

The ILM Level 5 Effective Coaching qualification is ideal for those who are new to coaching. It is well suited to leaders who wish to integrate coaching into their roles or begin their journey towards becoming skilled and confident coaches.
In contrast, the ILM Level 7 Coach Training programme is designed for senior leaders and experienced coaches who are ready to advance their practice. It is particularly suitable for those who already use coaching skills, hold a qualification, or wish to deepen their expertise at an executive level.

To help you make an informed decision, we’ve created a short and practical quiz. It has been designed to guide you towards the programme that best aligns with your experience, aspirations, and professional goals.
If you're considering an ILM coaching qualification, this is the perfect place to start.

Download the quiz and find out which programme is right for you. Learn more on our website.
