How was Iceland formed?

We’re on Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago (Westman Islands), and it’s a geography textbook come to life!

The Westman Islands were formed entirely by volcanic eruptions under the sea.

Heimaey is a fantastic place to see how Iceland was formed because you can:
🌋See lava fields
🌋Walk through volcanic craters
🌋Look out at that rose from the Atlantic in explosive bursts

The same tectonic forces that created Iceland are right under your feet!

Heimaey is a live classroom where plate tectonic and volcanic activity showcase the power of the Earth’s mantle.
