Did you know horses are incredibly sensitive to our body language and emotional state? They notice the smallest changes in posture, energy and movement — which is one of the reasons children can form such genuine connections with them.

At Surrey Hills Pony Preschool, riding is only one small part of what children learn.

Our sessions are about giving children real experiences, with real animals, in real time. There’s no screen and no pressure to get everything right first time.

They learn to keep trying when something feels difficult. To be patient when a pony needs a moment. To listen, adapt and communicate. To take responsibility, build trust and discover that confidence often comes quietly — through doing something they weren’t sure they could do.

Along the way we naturally develop resilience, determination, commitment, empathy, independence and self-belief.

Children learn how ponies think, what they need, how to care for them and how their own behaviour can affect another living being. They groom, handle, observe, problem-solve, ask questions and make decisions for themselves.

Learning to ride is just one part of a much bigger experience. 🐴🤍

We believe some of the most meaningful learning happens when children are given the space to explore, connect and learn through doing.

When the temperatures rise, our ponies’ wellbeing always comes first ☀️🐴

Here’s how we keep our ponies cool, comfortable, and happy during hot weather:

💧 Plenty of fresh water available at all times
🌳 Access to shade throughout the day
🚿 Regular hosing off to help them cool down
🌲 Shorter rides, staying in shaded areas only
⏸️ Long breaks between rides
🧺 Untacked between rides with water, hay, and plenty of rest
🌅 Only working 2–3 mornings a week, with full days off in between
🌡️ No work at all when temperatures go above 30°C

First and foremost, our ponies are beloved pets and family members. Their comfort, health, and happiness will always come before anything else ❤️🐴
