Summer activities to learn times tables!
Focus on one multiplication table at a time.
Skip counting is a useful method for learning, but ideally a child will eventually be able to answer random questions.
Include division facts while learning. Not just ‘What is 6x7?’ but also ‘How many 7s in 42? What is 42 divided by 6?’
Look at the properties of multiples. For example, all the multiples of 6 are even.
Exploit links (commutative property). If you know that 4x6 is 24, you also know 6x4.
Practical activites:
1. Chalk multiplication trail
Write multiplication questions along a path or pavement. The child walks, skips or jumps to each answer, saying it as they do so.
2. Times-table hopscotch
Draw a hopscotch grid and put products in the squares. Call out a multiplication and have the child hop to the answer.
3. Ball multiplication
Throw or kick a ball while chanting a times table. Change direction or bounce the ball for each number.
4. Number hunt
Hide cards showing products around the garden. Give the child multiplication questions and ask them to find the matching answers.
5. Skipping multiplication
Count in multiples while skipping. Try different rhythms, such as saying the multiple on every second or third jump.
6. Race to the answer
Put several answers on the ground. Call out a multiplication and have the child run to the correct answer. Add a time challenge once they are confident.
7. Outdoor multiplication treasure hunt
Create clues such as "Find the answer to 7 × 4." The correct answer leads to the next clue. Each multiplication becomes part of the route.
