Going into year 6 is a good time to check that the basics are secure.

This student found that she actually understands a lot about the way fractions work and now feels far more confident.

She worked hard for an hour and we celebrated with a snack and a fun maths game (and 10 minutes bonding with the rabbit!)

Printing workshop this morning, gelli printing and lino printing.

A lovely group; everyone working on their own project in their own style, gaining in skill and confidence and leaving with some beautiful prints.

Key stage 2 maths.

There are always different ways to work out a calculation.

This student struggled with subtraction with exchanging (so many numbers to cross out and adjust).

Obviously we started by ensuring they really understood the method they had been using, but then we looked at different methods.

They really using a number line and suddenly could answer the questions with ease and increasing confidence.

Sometimes, even in year 6, it's good to go back to basics to make sure you understand why you do things.

A brief practice with place value counters and this student suddenly made sense of 'borrowing' or 'exchanging' and crossing out digits.

I always take students back to the basics to fill in gaps so that they can move forward really well understanding what they are doing.

Children love codes, and verbal reasoning can be a seen problem-solving challenge.

Lots of number puzzles and codes today, with plenty of thinking, spotting patterns and working things out.

Learning, but with the feel of cracking a secret code!

Yesterday's beginner students produced some fantastic botanical gelli prints.

They quickly gained confidence with the techniques and created some really beautiful, eye-catching designs.

You don't need previous experience to produce beautiful artwork!

Summer tutoring doesn't always happen at a desk.

This week we're inspired by Wall-E, designing and building a robot from scrap materials, taking apart an old welding machine, learning the names and uses of tools, and developing English skills by writing instructions, labelling diagrams and recording the project.

Can't wait to see the next step next week!

Verbal reasoning can seem daunting at first, but it doesn't have to start with a test paper.

I like to introduce many of the skills through games, puzzles and fun challenges, helping children build confidence without even realising they're learning.

Once the patterns begin to click, the formal questions become much less intimidating.

Learning through play is often the best place to start.
