📚 Medical Word of the Week: Neonatal 👶

In recognition of NICU Awareness Month, our word of the week is Neonatal. ‘Neo’ means ‘new’ and ‘natal’ means ‘born’, so ‘neonatal’ literally means newborn.

The neonatal period refers to the first 28 days of a baby’s life. This period is a critical time for development, especially for those born prematurely or with medical complications, who may require specialised care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). For babies who have long stays in neonatal units the neonatal period extends beyond that first 28 days.

During this time, babies receive vital support to help them grow and thrive, and NICU teams work tirelessly to provide the best possible care.

Let's raise awareness and celebrate the strength of these amazing babies and the families and teams of professionals who support them.

💙 September is NICU Awareness Month 💙

This month, we recognise the strength and resilience of the babies and their families who spend time on neonatal intensive or special care baby units. NICU Awareness Month is a time to acknowledge the incredible journey that these babies, parents, and healthcare teams go through together.

The significance and stress of a NICU stay, whether brief or extended, should not be underestimated. As consultants who have cared for babies and families in neonatal units, the ParentMed team want to remember our littlest patients and acknowledge the amazing work that our wider NICU teams are doing everyday to support families and babies.

Let’s come together to spread awareness, share stories, and offer support to families navigating the NICU journey.

📚 Medical Word of the Week: Congenital 👶

This week, we’re focusing on the term Congenital, which refers to conditions or defects that are present at birth. Congenital issues can affect various parts of the body, including the heart, limbs, and other organs.

These conditions may arise from genetic factors, environmental influences during pregnancy, or a combination of both. Early diagnosis and intervention can greatly improve outcomes for children with congenital conditions, highlighting the importance of regular check-ups and screenings.

Understanding congenital conditions helps us support families and promote awareness about the diverse health challenges that can arise from the moment a baby is born.

As Paediatric Consultants we look after babies with RSV bronchiolitis admitted to the ward with severe respiratory compromise. Pregnant women can now receive immunisation against RSV which protect baby too - ask your midwife now.

“Knowing that there’s something that I can do in my pregnancy to protect my baby against RSV made choosing to get the vaccine an easy choice. Getting the vaccine was a quick and easy process and I’m glad that I have had the opportunity to reduce the chance of my baby becoming poorly from RSV.”

RSV leads to around 20,000 hospitalisations a year for babies under 1. You can now speak to your midwife to arrange your RSV vaccination in Dorset, and it can be given from 28 weeks.

For more information on the vaccination, visit www.staywelldorset.nhs.uk/vaccinations
