Sunday 14th saw Valiant head to Whitby to dive the protected wreck of the SM UC70, a WW1 German type II mine laying submarine sunk in August 1918 by a combination of bombing from a Blackburn Kangaroo and depth charges from HMS Ouse. She was lost with the entire crew of 31 men.

Whilst the visibility was only 2m and very dark at 27m everyone had a great day out

Another successful day for the Valiant crew, with spring tides and short slack water windows we took one of your new boat handlers James with us so we could make the most of the slack time and give him some much needed experience.

After a 17nm transit we arrived over the wreck 38m below us to find slack hadn’t arrived as expected. Following a wait the tide eased but never stopped running. Our 2 open circuit divers went in and secured the shot before enjoying their dive. Meanwhile the trapeze was prepared and deployed.

Following them were the Daves’ and Peter on CCR, making the most of the protection the wreck gave from the tide we smashed out an awesome dive with one of the Daves having 92 minutes in the water.

As usual lots of laughs were had, now for the cleaning up of the porthole and table lamp stand and of course the necessary paperwork to the Receiver of wreck

On Friday two members of the branch joined friends on a private boat to dive the Athenstane in 44m.

On Saturday Valiant launched again at Bridlington and making the most of the good tides stayed out at sea for 10 hours to catch both slack waters. Diving the Torpedo wreck in the morning and the Dryade in the afternoon. The visibility didn’t disappoint either!

Today members of the branch launched Valiant out of Bridlington to dive the wreck of the Biesbosch in 26m. We were blessed with flat clam seas and 3-4m of visibility.

Further searches of two other wreck sites were then made with sonar and brief exploratory dives, finished with a drift dive along the south side of Flambrough Head where we seas among the various sea life a number of dogfish
