Making outdoor rescue more accessible for Deaf people 🏔️

We recently welcomed Woodhead Mountain Rescue to an important focus group involving Deaf individuals with experience and interests in hiking and outdoor adventure.

The focus was on improving understanding of the communication needs of Deaf people during outdoor emergencies, particularly when someone is injured, lost or requires assistance.

Bringing Deaf people's lived experiences directly into these conversations is incredibly valuable. It gives organisations an opportunity to listen, learn and consider how their approach can become more inclusive.

It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and commitment to Deaf inclusion from the Woodhead Mountain Rescue volunteers.

We would also love to involve more Deaf people in future opportunities like this. By sharing your experiences and perspectives, you can help organisations improve their understanding and create more accessible services for the Deaf community.

Together, we can help make the outdoors safer and more inclusive for everyone. 🤟🏔️💙

Events like these are a great way to build community connections, promote accessibility, and encourage people to learn more about British Sign Language and Deaf awareness.

Do you have experience with hiking, mountain climbing or outdoor adventures?

We’d love to invite you to a small focus group to discuss how Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team can improve its support to better meet the individual needs of Deaf and Hard of hearing people.

We’ll explore practical ideas and solutions, including what could help if someone becomes lost or injured while enjoying the outdoors.

Over the past 20 years, Natalie has demonstrated unwavering dedication, hard work and commitment, making a lasting contribution to our organisation and the people we support. Her passion, professionalism and loyalty have helped shape the Foundation and positively impact countless lives along the way.

Some of our Yorkshire Rose College students recently had the opportunity to visit Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), led by Emma Shaheen, Director of Communications and Engagement. 🙌

During the visit, students explored how the Convo Video Relay Service (VRS) can support Deaf people in accessing communication within healthcare settings.

It was fantastic to see some of our students growing in confidence and independently using the Convo service to communicate with staff. They experienced first-hand how technology can help break down communication barriers that many BSL users face in everyday life.

A huge thank you to Emma Shaheen and the team at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for supporting this visit and helping our students learn more about communication access in healthcare environments.👏
