Stop Asking “Have You Revised?” 💬

It has one answer, and it tells you nothing.

Ask these instead:

“What did you revise today?” No specific topic, no real revision.

“Can you teach me one thing you learned?” If they can explain it, it’s gone in.

“What’s the topic you’re dreading?” That’s the one to do next.

“Is there anything you need from me?” They talk more when they don’t feel checked up on.

Pick one tonight, away from the front door.

Send this to a parent who’s tired of hearing “yes, I’ve done it.”

The 6 Exam Words That Decide The Marks 🔑

Knowing the answer isn’t enough if they misread the question.

Describe: what happens. No reasons.

Explain: why. Look for a “because”.

Compare: both things, side by side.

Analyse: break it into parts and link them.

Evaluate: both sides, then a judgement.

Suggest: apply what you know to something new.

The most common slip: describing when the question says explain.

Save this and test your child on it tonight.

Grade 4 vs Grade 5: Why One Grade Matters 🎓

A 4 is a “standard pass”. A 5 is a “strong pass”.

Many sixth forms and colleges ask for 5s, and often a 6+ in subjects your child wants to take at A level.

Below a 4 in English or maths usually means resitting after Year 11.

One parent found out when her son’s application got queried. He had a 4. The course needed a 5.

Check the entry requirements now, not in August.

What Mock Results Actually Mean đź“Š

Not a prediction. A map of where marks are being lost, with months left to fix it.

The week after, sort every lost mark into three piles:

Didn’t know it → content gap.

Ran out of time → timing.

Knew it but wrote it wrong → exam technique.

One student’s grade 4 in English turned out to be almost all technique. Six weeks later, she got a 6.

Save this for the day the results come home.

Things Schools Don’t Tell Year 11 Parents 🎓

Not secrets. Just things nobody explains until the window has closed.

Foundation tier is capped at a 5. Ask which tier they’re on now.

Sixth form applications often open in the autumn of Year 11.

Extra time and exam support must be in place well before the real exams.

Mocks often feed into predicted grades and references.

Past papers and mark schemes are free on exam board websites.

One parent found out in March her daughter was on foundation maths. She needed a 6.

Mocks Before Christmas? Start These 3 Things Now 🗓️

The next few weeks matter more than the final week ever will.

1. Get the actual dates and topics, not “sometime before Christmas”.

2. Prioritise the two weakest subjects every week.

3. One timed past paper question per subject, per week, marked against the real scheme.

Three things started now beat a panicked three weeks in December.

Save this and go through it together this weekend.
