People make it look easy, but riding a racehorse takes strength, fitness and skill 💪
A thoroughbred is half a tonne of power, bred for speed. On the gallops, it's not about going as fast as possible; it's about control, balance and skill.
The rider in this video is still learning those skills. Nobody arrives at the National Horseracing College as the finished product, and every time they sit on a horse is another step in building the ability, fitness and experience needed for a career in racing.
It takes resilience to keep learning, determination to improve, and the willingness to put in the hard work every single day. Our Training Instructors will coach you, but your progress comes from your commitment.

💪 Fitness matters, and it can make all the difference to your journey at the National Horseracing College. 🏇
Whether you're following the rider or a non-rider pathway, being physically fit is a key part of succeeding on our residential Foundation Course.
Working with racehorses is demanding. During the Foundation Course, days start early, finish late, and every day is active. You'll be handling horses, working outdoors, and developing the strength, stamina and resilience required for a career in the racing industry.
The fitter you are before you arrive, the easier you'll find the transition. You'll reach milestones quicker and be better prepared for the physical demands of the course.
But you don't need an expensive gym membership to get started.
✅ Try the Couch to 5K app
✅ Go for a brisk walk, jog or run
✅ Get out on your bike
✅ Build strength at home with planks, push-ups, squats and strengthening exercises
✅ Keep a record of what you do and challenge yourself to improve each week
The most important thing is to start early. Don't wait until a few weeks before your course begins. Preparing months in advance will help you arrive feeling confident and ready to make the most of every opportunity.
We've got plenty of resources to help, including fitness advice from our Fitness Instructor and fitness handouts. If you'd like more information, get in touch via [email protected].
🏇 Your future career starts with good preparation, and fitness is one of the best investments you can make in yourself.
