Proof that real-life fluency and passing a GCSE are two totally different sports.

If you’re preparing for GCSE French or Spanish, don't just study words—study the mark scheme. 💡

Don’t fall into this trap on your Spanish Listening exam! 🤦‍♂️🚫

Spotting words you know isn't enough—one word like 'pero' changes the whole meaning. ✍️✨

Six years in UK secondary classrooms taught me one truth: the system makes kids think they're "bad at languages" when, in reality, the environment is just set up against them.

You get five minutes at a parents’ evening.

That’s barely enough time to say your child is polite and completes their homework, let alone unpack why they feel anxious every time they open their French or Spanish book.

Swipe through for the 5 things I wish every parent understood about school languages:

👉 Slide 1: The "optional" trap and why effort drops early

👉 Slide 2: Why quiet learners become invisible in a room of 30

👉 Slide 3: The GCSE technique game vs. real communication

👉 Slide 4: The real reason teens claim they "hate" languages

👉 Slide 5: Why daily habits beat "natural talent" every single time

I loved teaching, but I left the classroom because I wanted to build confident speakers, not just drill exam past papers.

If your teen is struggling, feeling overwhelmed, or convincing themselves they "just don't have the language brain," send me a DM. Let’s get their confidence back on track. 💬✨

Here's what I got wrong.
I thought one-to-one was the best thing I could offer, because it's what everyone says is best. And for some things it is.

But I kept watching the same problem.

A kid who could write a beautiful paragraph would freeze in the speaking exam, because the only person they'd ever spoken French to was me, and I'm not a fair test.

I nod. I wait. I already know what they're trying to say.

Put that same kid next to another Year 11 and something changes.

They ask each other. They laugh at the same mistake. They try harder because someone's watching who isn't a teacher.

So I'm moving to groups of four.

Not because it's cheaper (though it is), but because it works better.

Same year group, same board, one skill a session, and you get a number from me every half term, not "they're doing well".

If your teenager is in Year 10 or 11 doing French or Spanish, or Year 7 to 9 doing Spanish, message me "GROUP" and I'll tell you what's open.

‘Je suis quatorze ans’ /‘Estoy catorce años’ is the mistake I've heard more than any other in my years of teaching.

It's not a bad mistake, it's an English mistake.

English says I am fifteen. French and Spanish says I have fifteen.

❌ Je suis quatorze ans ✅ J'ai quatorze ans.

❌ Estoy catorce años✅ Tengo catorce años.

💾 Save this before your next speaking practice.

Four things to look for before you hand over money for a language tutor.

🟢 They ask your exam board first. AQA and Edexcel are different exams. If they don't ask, they're guessing.

🟢 They know the mark scheme. Being fluent and knowing what gets a 9 are different skills. For GCSE you need the second one.

🟢 They teach in small groups. One-to-one sounds premium, but a language needs a conversation partner. Your child can't do a role play with a wall.

🟢 They give you a number. "Doing really well" means nothing. "Working at a 5, aiming for a 7, here's the gap" is what you're paying for.

I'm a qualified UK MFL teacher, former head of department, Edexcel examiner.

I taught thirty at a time for six years.

Then I taught one at a time. Neither was right.

Thirty is too many.

The kids who want to learn get lost behind the ones who don't.
But one is too few.

A language is a conversation, and a conversation needs someone on the other side. When it's just you and me, I'm the only person you ever speak to. That's not how you get confident.

Four OR six is small enough that I hear every mistake.
Big enough that there's someone to ask a question to, someone to copy when you're stuck, someone to quietly try to beat.

So that's the shift. Small groups, same year group, same exam board, one skill a session, twenty minutes of homework. I'll tell you every half term exactly where your child is.

Groups are opening this half term. Message me "GROUP" and I'll tell you what's available.

The writing paper isn't asking if you like sport.

It's asking if you can build a sentence.

Here's the four-step upgrade I teach every student in the first session:

1️⃣ Reason — parce que…
2️⃣ Frequency + second verb — je joue… tous les samedis
3️⃣ Another person — avec mes amis, qui sont…
4️⃣ Opinion word that isn't j'aime — à mon avis…
Save this and have a go with your own sentence.
