A few days ago we released our winter warmer post and briefly mentioned Torpor, but what actually is Torpor?

Torpor is a shock like state that can effect hamster if they become too cold, and/or they have a limited food and water supply. If rhe room drops below 17°c, Torpor becomes a risk, the danger zone is around 15°c. It is increadibly important to maintain the room temperature at above 17°c to reduce the risk of Torpor, and ensure there is plenty of food and water on supply at all times.

Many people misinterprete Torpor as hibernation. Domesticated hamster DO NOT hibernate.
Torpor can be life threatening if not acted on quickly.

This year, with the cost of living crisis impacting everyone, Torpor is an even higher risk than normal. We have put together a step by step guide of what to do in the event your hamster slips into Torpor this winter.

We have also compiled an interactive winter hamster care guide to help everyone avoid the risks of Torpor by making a few simple changes to their enclosure. The link to this can be found in our story.
